I don't know how much input he had in the hiring, but it seemed like he had final say about firing him midseason, and he didn't, even though he had to know the guy was going to cost him eventually. And that's a strike we can hold against him, he doesn't have the heart to make tough decisions. And don't @ me about firing a coordinator midseason, because the Ravens did just that in December of 2012 and still won the Super Bowl.
Do you think they could have gotten Fangio out of retirement to replace him because it was probably that or an internal hire? I'm legitimately curious there. Zimmer had Turner and Flip disappear mid season, so it's not like the track record works for a SB every time either. I agree Donatell was an issue.. heck we all do. But the cure can be worse than the disease, especially in the short term as well.
And I'm not sure he had that permission either... nor am I sure this would have been a good use of said capital for a new coach in his role.
With that said we haven't played a meaningful game with him as DC and his opportunity as a head coach had bouts of clashing with his young QB None of that imo indicates he is a slam dunk great head coaching candidate.
There's one other big thing here... He's got an outstanding lawsuit with the NFL that's going to be very public since parts of it will not be in an arbitrated kangaroo court (to quote Florio). Kudos to Pit and MN for not blackballing him (that actually says a lot about the Wilfs and their commitment to winning in my opinion), but he's probably going to get the blackball treatment to some extent, so I wouldn't be surprised if he stays here for a bit unless he's extremely successful. I don't mind that, because this defense needs a good rebuild, and with KOC being an offense minded coach, having someone strong on that end with a good track record is a good thing. He'll probably eventually get poached, but I'm not sure it happens if our defense goes from abysmal to 20ish... If we're top 5 this season, yeah, he's probably gone. But I doubt that happens.
Now if only KOC would get a real OC and turn a bit more of the offense over to that person... I like offensive minded, but play calling so far hasn't been Kevin's strength.
