How about we talk about the 2020 Draft? Because that is the one for which we actually have enough evidence to back up any grades?
I will keep it quick for brevity's sake.
Justin Jefferson? Definitely an A.
Jeff Gladney? Definitely an F.
Ezra Cleveland? 47 games played at a acceptable level, not great, not bad. I'd say that is a B-, C+
Cam Dantzler? Got a little bit of decent play out of him, more not great play, and he is gone now. D+.
D.J. Wonnum? Man he gets a lot of hate...but did you know, he has more sacks than anyone drafted after him? And, only three people drafted ahead of him have more? I would say that is worth a C.
James Lynch? Decent backup run defender, but was drafted to provide a pass rush that has been generally non-existent. D+.
Troy Dye? Pretty good Special Teams contributor, but a liability on defense. D+.
Harrison Hand? He intercepted Drew Brees once...and that is the highlight of his Vikings career, that has been over since last August. D-.
K.J. Osborn? Now, he was a disaster as a rookie, but much like Wonnum...no one drafted after him has as many catches, yards, or TDs as him. Can you really ask for more than a guy drafted 176th overall who has obviously been more productive than anyone else you may have had? A.
Blake Brandel? Not much was expected when he was drafted, after 2020 on the Practice Squad, became a sixth OL in 2021 and swing tackle who played pretty well in reserve duty last season and is penciled in as the 6th guy on the OL in 2023 too. For a 6th Rounder? C+
Josh Metullus? Special Teams Captain and even played solidly in place of Harrison Smith when called on. Again, a 6th Rounder providing more than most. B.
Kenny Willekes? Played 6 games and netted 2.5 sacks. Waived-Injured last year, signed with Atlanta, did nothing and is back now, but faces an uphill climb to make the 53 man. Those 2.5 sacks in 6 games? Better than all but 1 guy drafted after him. So? I would say C-.
Nate Stanley & Brian Cole II? F.
Kyle Hinton? Hung around for 3 years, not playing at all until Weeks 17 & 18 last season. Hinton signed with Atlanta this offseason. D.
Overall? Possibly the best receiver in the NFL today. Another productive receiver. An excellent, respected team leader on Special Teams. A serviceable G, serviceable backup T. A somehow, inexplicably productive (relative to the rest of his class) pass rusher. And a few reserve players likely to provide for the 2023 Vikings...or someone else.
The lack of production from the late Jeff Gladney (RIP) is a big drawback, and the 50/50 hit rate on those first 4 picks, top 100 guys? I would like to see better than that ideally.
I would give this draft a C+, with B- or B still possible given Jefferson, Osborn, Metullus and Cleveland still having opportunities to add points.
See? I have actual NFL track records to back that up. Better than grading guys who won't even see the field for preseason games for four more long months.
