Lol!
Oh, what you've garnered from your childhood recollections. This is what happened:They drafted Palmer back in 94 to be a slotback/scatback/sometime wide receiver - but they had added a vet during that offseason who was also extremely good at doing those same things. His name was Amp Lee(94-97) They also had all kinds of outstanding skill talent at that time - everywhere. Carter/Reed/Ismael/Robert Smith/the aforementioned Lee. Leroy Hoard (96-99).Then they added Moss. So...... a lot of talent and only so many bawls to go around. Then his career ended prematurely. It wasn't that Palmer was inept. Anyone who was an adult, and also a football fan at that time knows this
Amp Lee was a good, but by no means spectacular 3rd down back. If the reason you, as the 40th overall selection in the Draft, cannot crack the lineup is Amp Lee...that is a problem.
David Palmer was supposed to be an explosive, do-it-all player, who ended his career with fewer than 800 yards and 2 tds from scrimmage. Again, for the 40th overall pick to end his career as a strictly return specialist with 4 total career tds is a really poor return on investment.
*Players selected AFTER David Palmer:
Lamar Smith: 4800+ rushing yards in his career.
Jamal Anderson: 5300+ rushing yards and unquestionably the MVP of the 1998 Atlanta Falcons.
Dorsey Levens: 7300 career scrimmage yards and 53 tds, primarily
,for the Vikings archival.
Charlie Garner: 10,800 yards from scrimmage in his career.
Hall of Fame G Larry Allen.
Rodney Harrison...the '98 NFC Championship Game ends differently if Harrison is back there instead of Old Stone Hands Robert Griffith.
But, you know, I was only 15-20 during Palmer's career, so maybe my brain just wasn't developed enough to see his greatness.
