Wow are you folks seriously missing the boat on this one.
Ham, like Oliver, is another clear cut sign that Kevin really did look in the mirror and realize he can't continue to have Kirk (or any QB) drop back, hold the ball forever, and chuck to JJ a zillion times a season.
CJ played his highest snap counts with 2 TEs on the field. O'Connell is going for a more Shanahan/Kubiak approach and using heavy personnel to untrack the running game. And those same guys can also be short passing targets.
You don't need to be a burner when the Defense is playing Zone and bracketing JJ. Oliver and Ham are going to have space for easy pitch and catches on early downs for 4-8 yards against 2 High Safety looks. That will help supplement the running game. And unlike Irv and Mundt, these guys can actually catch the damn ball.
Once the DC brings another player into the box Kevin will start dialing up passes to JJ and Hock. And that's without taking into account how they're blocking improves the ground attack.
These won't be checkdown passes when the Vikings are behind the chains. These will be designed quick game passes to players DCs aren't going to be focused on. Until they're forced to adjust, which allows Kevin to get JJ free more often and faster so Kirk doesn't end up with the 2nd longest Time to Throw again like last year.
The real question is will he stick with the heavy personnel groupings if it's not working early. It shows me something that he's willing to make this big of an adjustment after his Rookie season as a HC/OC but will be stay committed to the changes?
