Welcome, Vikings Fans! This is the first fully-fleshed out version of my Mock Vikings Offseason, as concisely as I could type it. I tried to move through this exercise from the lens of the Front Office as opposed to doing exactly what I would do. So, if there is anything with which you disagree, reply below and I'll let you know why I think that might happen. Let's get to it!
2023 Mock Offseason
Before making any moves, the Vikings sit at -$24.4million in 2023 cap space. Let's keep track of that as we go.
While it may not be the first move to take place chronologically, the first domino to fall in the planning stages has to be the Kirk Cousins situation. As it stands the Vikings will pay Kirk $48.75mil over the next 3 seasons, $12.5mil of which is spread over two void years in 2024 and 2025.
What makes sense to me is extending into the void years, and fielding the best team possible around Kirk this year and maybe next, selecting a rookie QB in a strong 2024 draft class.
Extension looks like 2yr/$80mil in new money with $60mil guaranteed (a Vikings win negotiating against Captain Guarantee, but I could see this one being fully gtd. as well..) shaving off ~$13mil of 2023 cap hit and voiding $8.4mil into 26 and 27 (chump change after inflation). Easy-ish out after 2024.
After Kirk's extension we're at -$11.8mil
Almost Even
Our next order of business is restructuring some of these malleable contracts ol' Rob has put together over the years.
- Fully restructure Brian O'Neill's contract converting $13.3mil salary and $600k in prorated bonus to clear $10.4mil in 2023 cap space.
- At age 28 and playing on the offensive line, I think O'Neill will be viewed as a prime candidate for a full restructure as he's unlikely to drop off significantly in performance over the course of his deal.
- Partially restructure Harrison Smith's contract converting $7mil salary into bonus to clear $4.6mil in 2023 cap space.
- This uses about half of our funny money left on his deal and leaves some flexibility as he ages. The longest tenured member of the roster would retire a Viking if I had any say, and I think that could be the case.
- Partially restructure the contract of Za'Darius Smith. Convert $8.3mil in salary $4.55mil in prorated bonus to create $6.2mil in 2023 cap space.
- I really considered not touching this contract, as that seems just as likely, but Z is a bargain on his current number and I don't think the Front Office would mind pushing some money back into 2024 and beyond. If he stays reasonably healthy it's a great deal either way.
Just like that, we're operating in the green with $9.4mil
Make More Room
Here are the easy decisions in this regard:
- Cut Jordan Hicks (Saves $5mil 2023)
- Cut Chris Reed (Saves $2.5mil 2023)
- Cut CJ Ham (Saves $3mil 2023) I'm a big CJ Ham guy but he only played 14% of offensive snaps in 2023
- Cut Ross Blacklock (Saves $1.7mil 2023) Worth a shot.
A couple of gut punches that followed were cutting Dalvin Cook to clear $5.9mil in 2023 cap space (and $15mil in 2024), and trading Adam Thielen to clear $6.4mil in 2023 (and nearly $22mil in 2024!).
- Creating 2023 space and 2024 space is something a competitive rebuilder may enjoy.
- I look to the Robert Woods deal of last offseason. I think Minnesota could get a 6th, maybe a 5th rounder back for the veteran wideout.
So after restructures, one trade, and some cuts Kwesi and the boys had $33.9mil to fiddle with, but I don't think they stop there.
Extend Danielle Hunter: As it stands, the Vikings are paying Hunter $24.36mil over the next 3 years, splitting $11.24 of it over 2 void years. I think something that makes sense for both parties is 4yr/$90mil in new money turning his deal into a 5yr/$114.4mil deal.
-Hunter is great when healthy and is coming off of a phenomenal year, but I think he understands he won't be resetting the market with a new deal.
- $36mil in new guarantees, no guaranteed $ past 2025
- This extension is also structured to save $2mil in 2023 cap space.
Extend TJ Hockenson: This is the final year of TJ' contact and let's not mess around. 4yr/$68mil would match the average annual value of Darren Waller's contract tying TJ for the highest paid Tight End in the league.
- Contract's total value: 5yr/$77.3mil
- 2023 cap savings: $5.3mil
*BIG GULP* Extend Eric Kendricks: 2yr/$16mil in new money, 3yr/$27mil total, with 1 void year.
- Whether EK stays or goes seems like a coin flip but here's why I think this works: The group will need a veteran linebacker and Hicks needs to go. Flores' scheme will have Kendricks (and the rest of the linebackers) covering backs and tight ends more often than he's left out to dry in the middle of the field like he was in 2022.
- I feel that they still value his leadership and a deal like this would actually lower his 2023 cap number by roughly $6mil while keeping both his 2024 and 2025 numbers below his current $11.4mil.
Before Spending, the Vikings have $47.3m in available cap.
Keep 'Em In Town (Expiring Deals)
Most of you are probably familiar with Dalvin Tomlinson's situation. He currently accounts for $7.5mil in dead money in 2023, without a new deal in place. The organization moved the "void date" of his contract to extend the negotiating period with the 29-year-old.
- The recent Roy Robertson-Harris deal could serve as something of a model for Dalvin's extension. 3yr/$30mil in new money, 3yr/$37.5mil in total. This deal has his 2023 cap hit at $10mil, and $12.5m APY, which sounds fair to me. Dalvin has been one of our most consistent pieces on the defense since joining the team.
Duke Shelley (2yr/$7mil), Kris Boyd (2yr/$3.8mil), Nick Mullens (1yr/$3m), Andrew Depaola (1yr/$1.1mil) and Greg Joseph (2yr/$4.6mil) were all signed to pretty inconsequential 1 or 2 year deals. All of these guys could bring some value back to the 2023 squad. The Duke is a must-keep especially at what will probably be a very affordable number for the position. Kris Boyd has been great on special teams and by all accounts, in the locker room so let's keep him in town. I don't see any reason not to keep continuity at backup QB, Kicker (I know, but he finished strong) and long-snapper (All-Pro).
Lastly for now, the Justin Jefferson extension: 4yr/$124mil in new money sets the market in annual average salary, $1mil higher than that of Tyreek Hill's recent deal with Miami. It doesn't sound like the front office will hesitate to pay the man and I certainly didn't in this exercise. $46m guaranteed, could be much more and I'd be fine with that.
I'll follow this up with some Free Agent signings and a 7-round mock draft to go along with this will be coming out this week on The Daily Skol Podcast on Spotify - I'll link that below once it's live. Thanks for the read!
