throughout the season the vitriol for Ed Donatel was at a level that was unparalelled, and rightfully so. What we all expected from the defense never showed up and average teams and players constantly had career days against the Vikings D. We all saw players play in a scheme that was sitting back reacting to plays and prevent huge gains whilke allowing teams easy gains straight down the field hoping to prevent touchdowns once they got to the red zone. Players were not often given a chance to attack or showcase their best skills.
Soon after the season, Ed was rightfully relieved of his duties and the Vikings looked to make sweeping changes to the D.
If we can all agree that the scheme was bad, then why do fans now direct so much negative thoughts at the 11 players that line up on the d side of the ball? If it was the scheme than it was not the players, they were not put in postion to excell. I will say that some are getting long in the tooth and there are few players on the D that have superstar potential, but not all 11 need to be jettisoned this offseason.
I think the team will draft some D, but I think they will add some players in FA, maybe only 1 or 2 difference makers, but If Flores brings and attacking D style then they will need some of the players on the team to step up or return to a higher level of success.
Look no farther than how the Miami Dolphins D made a jump when Flores took over. He did not have a bunch of all pros on the D and they made huge strides in his first year. Also, Flores comes form years of working under one of the best D minds in the game, Belicheck. Those New England teams continually have very good Defenses year after year without drafting high picks, instead they would continually sign aging defenders who had been tossed to the scrap heap by teams and getting high end effort out of them.
My thoughtys, and hopes, are the Vikings add couple good FAs, maybe 1 stud, would love to get Payne on the DL, and draft a player or 2 that can play in '23. But the real strides need to be getting the players under contravt to make strides and compete in a scheme that highlights what the player do best.
All that said, we do have some players whos contract need attention. If they are willilng to do something with their contracts, we will see them stay and compete, if not they will be replaced with younger players who can be signed with contracts that will allow the Vikings to get the cap back in line.
