I'm incredibly glad Donatell is gone; no question about that. But one thing maybe being overlooked is that his defense was actually "Bend and then bend some more and then get a turnover or sack from out of the blue that stopped a drive". This team didn't win 13 games just thanks to being an offensive powerhouse: they scored +30 points only 4 times. Timely (if not even) defensive success was a big part of their record.
The big debate, IMO, is whether that had anything to do with Donatell or if it was just pure horseshoe-in-your-pocket luck? My own opinion is that it was an incredible streak of luck. Luck balances out and a team loses its charm, and we're going to see a big swing back to normal luck. As the team told us after 2017, Case Keenum's luck was going to undergo "regression to the mean" after one great season. It did, though we didn't get any better without him either.
Anyway, does anyone think that the timely defensive plays were anything besides luck? Did Donatell somehow coach the team to get last-second turnovers?
It wasn't all luck. A byproduct, perhaps the only positive byproduct of the Donashell, is that DBs were playing zone with their eyes on the QB...that lends itself to more picks than trying to play a receiver in tight man only turning to look for the ball at the last instant.
Other turnovers? Strips and fumbles...forcing them is a skill in most cases...recoveries come down to luck a lot.
