Yeah but Sitewolf, that still doesnt address the fact the Vikes have no solid interior defensive tackles. ( Tomlinson is ok, and average tackle who gets in the back field some, but not enough) I think its unfair to evaluate Cine too, but Booth was terrible. This might change, Joey Browner was awful his first year or two.
Watching these play off teams today its so obvious these teams are good in the trenches. We suck there. I hate to admit it but Z Smith lately looks on the downslope of his career. There is a way these teams got good in the trenches. They pick guys early who are physical at the point of attack. We sign average vets. You pick a guy like Davis, I wanted him too but that is just the start, then you go get one or two more. And if one of them is a clunker you just keep going back to the well. The Ravens and Steelers have done this for years and they always are stout defensive teams.
I know its like it was culture. Zimmer loved cornerbacks and Denny Green loved his offensive lineman but prior to that the Vikings were always drafting defensive lineman. I do believe that after two or three guys in this years draft, its a pool of suspects on edge. They are not going to be there at #23 So for me its tackle or linebacker.
What got us into this is all the whiffs by Speilman, and as you say neglect. Hell last time I remember us tacking D line early it was Shariff Floyd. There are two CB to consider -- Gonzalez and Witherspoon but after that the class thins out. If they draft another corner at #23, I just wont understand. With no pass to speak of this rookie is going to be asked to cover way too long, which could result in the guys confidence falling apart. Big no for that reason.
