In 2018 Cousins wanted to get multiple shots at contract negotiation. In 2023, Cousins may have an incentive to get multiple years contracted. If the Vikings draft a QB in 2024 who takes over and Cousins walks into unrestricted free agency in 2025, what's a 36 year old Cousins going to get? 32 year old Kirk Cousins level money ($35-40M)? Jameis Winston level money ($14-15M), Andy Dalton level money ($10-12M)? Teddy Bridgewater level money ($6-7M)? Cousins potentially stand to lose a lot if the next 1-2 years don't go great; he could even lose a lot on a 1 year extension if things do go great.
Bottom line is that Cousins doesn't have the leverage and he has much more of a need to get a deal done, so it's reasonable to expect a more traditional late career QB contract structure.
Yes thats kinda my point obviously Cousins wants the long term deal, I don't really care about him I care about handcuffing my favorite team. I get it there could be outs with it but this would just be crazy to me to do. I realize nothing to guaranteed in the draft but you could always make that move up to get a guy its just how much your willing to give. I get not getting rid of Kirk this year, but unless that long-term is very favorable to the Vikings having easy and unexpensive outs to Kirk by 2025 I would tread very lightly with this.
