Sure we can move on from players to create more cap but that doesn’t change we did in fact push money out and when you do that you still need to replace those players. I believe we also used void years to not accounted for here. I never said we didn’t have flexibility but the flexibility we have comes from moving on from players and resetting the roster essentially. What about smith and thielen? They have dead money as well don’t they?
2023 Dead Cap (as of 1/10/2023): $7.0M / Team
2022 Dead Cap (As of 1/17/2023): $36.0M / Team
If this year is like last year, teams can expect to take on ~$30M additional dead cap on average as they release over-priced veterans. The Vikings are well positioned to make and absorb this tradeoff.
Ahhh so that’s important given we are talking about moving on from some of these aging vets. At the end of the day if we move on from all of Smith/Thielen/Kendricks/Cook/Hicks/Ham we only have about 20 million according to over the cap. That’s without a kicker or draft picks or Tomlinson/Bradbury/Shelley or other fas.
While I agree with you that we have flexibility to create more that often comes via cutting current guys (which need replacements) or pushing the hits in future years (which lead to our current situation). We already are short on draft capital too on top of the limited space even with moving on from those guys most tend to mention.
To me that is not a very good situation to be in heading into the off-season. I really hope we stop the pushing out the issue to future years for a core that is still getting older and hasn’t won a playoff game in 3 seasons now. If that’s the case and we just eat the dead cap from the guys cut it will not leave us with much in terms of opportunities to replace those guys, sign our own fa and add others. That’s why I think we are left in a tough spot. If you know of a way to create more cap without losing talent and not extend/push money out for larger hits in future seasons I would love to see that plan but right now I’m not seeing how. That’s why I feel like we are in a rough spot where we either continue the same old and push for more mediocrity or finally reset the books and just eat those hits now.
