Minnesota won't have a shot at Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, but they will have a shot at the logjam or guys in the tier right under them. I have all of them rated higher than Will Levis or Anthony Richardson currently.

Don't want Spencer Rattler, but that's just me. Wasn't he benched and replaced his junior year at Oklahoma?

Yep. To extend my analogy, restructuring contracts to free up cap space is just like refinancing my mortgage to lower my payment.

(disclaimer: the problem with my analogy is that borrowing future cap in the NFL is at negative interest rates)

He started to really turn it around the second half of last season at South Carolina.

I saw that they're converting his $20M roster bonus plus $4M of his $10M base salary into a $24M signing bonus. That would free up $16M of cap space by pushing it into the two void years. IOW, if they don't extend him before the 2024 season, we would have a $28.5M dead cap hit next year. That gives us some flexibility, and was likely part of the plan all along. The caveat? If we then turn around and trade him, we take an immediate $28.5M cap hit and the new team owes him $6M salary for 2023. Translation? He's not being traded.

I realize they have something like 100M for next season, but they just put 16 of that into next season with this move. Cousins is now going to hit 28M against the cap in 24... that's not really ripping the bandaid off.

So we have conflicting reports. Overthecap is showing two more void years (which mean nothing) and that link indicates only $20M bonus conversion, not $24M.

I was referring to the footnote:

UPDATE 1:53 p.m. ET: Albert Breer of SI.com reports that Cousins’ salary is unchanged and that the restructure only involves converting the roster bonus. Two more void years have been added to the contract to further spread out the cap hit.

That would only indicate $13M space addition.
