I dont think people blamed Zimmer for the defense directly the last two years, but his time as a coach was also up. Not sure if thats what your saying though.
Were you in a coma for a couple of years?
90% of this board absolutely blamed Zimmer for the defense. Repeatedly. Essentially, he's a defensive-minded HC, he should be able to do more with less! He shouldn't need good players at every position! It's his job to figure it out! He's the DB guru, right? Blah-di-blah!
Now, imagine my surprise when this year it's, "OMG, the corners suck! P2 is our only good one, and he's as old as dirt! We have no pass rush! The LBs are trash! Smith is declining! We need a complete defensive overhaul! We have no talent!"
So, even though we ran it back, it was coaching last year and it's the lack of talent this year? ...when upgrades/investments were made?
I'll let Reignman and whoskmoon tell us how much "improved" the offense, defense, and special teams really are.
Maybe roster improvements fix it all - and offensive and defensive playcalling are both fine - but in how much time? If we're moving ahead with this competitive rebuild, the coaches are absolutely expected to get the most out of the roster as improvements continue to be made. That's why I said, within reason, coaching/scheme should be able to mask deficiencies. If that was the expectation for Zimmer and his defense, it's 100% the expectation for KO and his offense. Zimmer's offenses were never great, but he also didn't let them be worst in the league. KO has to figure his defense out and ASAP. Maybe that's letting his DC go? But wouldn't that be a Zimmer move? Or if he still believes in Donatell, he might need to focus more on being a leader/HC and less on offensive playcalling. Get more involved with the defense, like Zimmer was always told to do with the offense.
