Would you guys really want Lamar over Cousins? Yeah he's mobile but...
I would rather this thread was, "How many potentially available QBs would you take over Cousins?" Lamar Jackson fits that profile, so does Tom Brady, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garropolo, Carson Wentz, Daniel Jones, and maybe Trey Lance. Any others? Of the ones I listed, there are few I would take over Cousins - Jackson if we could afford him (unlikely!), maybe Lance if the trade cost is low (3rd-rounder).
Carr is probably the best chance of an upgrade, so for the right price that might work, especially if we get something in a Cousins trade. Mayfield (not mentioned) might be an upgrade as I don't think he got a fair shake in Cleveland, nor do I think Carolina was really a good place to revitalize his career. That's about it. Carr is still iffy, but I'd say better than 50%, so of all the names he's probably worth a listen, and I'm being generous with Mayfield as I think the risk is higher.
I highly doubt Wentz and Jones would be upgrades. Two teams have failed to fix Wentz and the Colts in particular should have been able to fix him, and Jones needed to face our defense twice to look like Kirk. Garoppolo would be an upgrade if healthy, but he cannot stay healthy behind a much better line in SF. You can pretty much guarantee that he's going to be out for significant time by week 5 and either miss the post season or get hurt at a critical spot. Lance looked awful after sitting out a year to develop. I realize it's a small sample, but the rumor out of SF was that he looked bad, and he looked the part when he played. I don't care what they paid for him, I wouldn't trade 3rd for him right now, and I doubt many others in the NFL would either; and with Purdy hurt, I doubt he's available anyways. Brady is done. He'll get a job somewhere due to lack of suitors, but he won't be better than Kirk. He hasn't been for a while.
I am not sure what people think they will get in Lamar. He has yet to equal his 2019 season. That is telling. Oh, and he had the 2nd best OL behind Philly this season, so it's not like he doesn't have time to throw the ball. Yes, he'd have better receivers here, which would be nice, but I don't expect JJ to be happy when Jackson is running every other snap, and I don't see much of a scenario where we can even afford to keep them both on the same team. If you think Cousin's contract was bad, wait for the sucker that pays Jackson. I'd rather that not be us. They are paying for one good season that happened years ago, and one that he has not improved on or come close to replicating.
I think the right answer is drafting a guy and letting him sit a year behind Kirk unless by some miracle we can flip Cousins for a boat load of picks or somehow get one of the top two QBs in 23 (knowing that 23 is effectively a lost season either way)... but without capital in 23 to do that, realistically we're looking at 24, which means sadly Cousins is getting another extension.... and I just threw up in my mouth a little bit typing that.
