“Let me make this very clear, when Mattison decided to re-sign here, it was with the strong understanding, not written guarantee, but strong understanding that Dalvin Cook was moving on.” - Darren Wolfson – Mackey & Judd (SKOR North)
If you're a fan under the belief that even if the Vikings are "competitive" in 2023, they won't be in contention for a Conference or Super Bowl Championship, then perhaps it would better serve the long-term health of the overall roster if more snaps were given to younger players such as Mattison, Chandler, Kene and McBride over Cook who, even if he returns in 2023, is probably not in the long-term plans beyond this season.
For those who thought the "return" on the Za'Darius Smith trade was "understandable", the primary reasons why they believe that were 1) cleared cap space, not just in '23 but also in '24, and 2) there was adequate depth behind him via Davenport...
...it's certainly "understandable" that the same could be said of moving Cook...
The depth behind Za'Darius was:
- Hunter is one on of the best pass rusher in the league in his prime (71 career sacks)
- Davenport is a high dollar free agent in Davenport (31.5 sacks)
- multiple guys who were used extensively in rotation: Jones II and Wonnum (19 combined sacks) both played significantly more snaps than Mattison.
Without Cook, the depth at RB is what? Mattison has been viewed up close by 2 coaching staffs and 4 OCs and all decided he was the clear backup to Cook. At this point he doesn't need "More snaps give to him", he's a veteran on a second contract, it is well know what he is. And after Mattison? Nwangwu has had two years and never been more than a return specialist; for his career, he has 47 snaps on offense. Look at RBs in the NFL and how many cases do you find of guys who were non-factors for 2 years, then suddenly put it together? That's a very short list. Listing Nwangwu as RB depth is not a realistic take at this point in his career. Chandler's potential is based on one pre-season game and college film. McBride is a 7th rounder, and the rate at which 7th rounders turn into contributing players at RB is maybe 1 in 4.
The depth behind Z was an entire starting line up and rotation players - a group that has combined for 111.5 sacks. I didn't like losing Z, because more pass rushers are better, but the is logic that the team is still strong without him. The depth behind Cook is a clear backup and 3 guys who haven't played RB in the NFL.
Practice is for getting better, games are for putting the best players on the field.
