I love stats like these and appreciate you posting them. Context is really important with a stat like this though, and when you add some context to these numbers, Cook doesn't look all that bad from a negative yardage standpoint. Cook had the most negative yardage carries at 62, but Henry had 61, Chubb had 58, Walker had 54 and Jacobs 51. Cook also lost the fewest yards of all of those guys in that situation outside of Jacobs who lost 1 fewer yard on negative or 0 yardage plays.
The other context that is really important here is looking at what other running backs did behind this same Oline. Mattison had 18 rushes for 0 or negative yards, which accounted for a 1/4 of his rushes, a little more often than Cook. He also averaged a full yard lost more per attempt than Cook.
On the flip side looking at the positive part of these stats, only Jacobs and Chubb had a significantly higher number of rushes 10 yards or more than Cook. Cooks YPA on those 10+ yarders was significantly higher than those two though, and was near the top in the NFL on 10+ yard rushes. A sign he still has explosive speed. His YPA was 18.33, Mattison's was 12 on his 9 rushes of 10+ yards.
I don't doubt Cook's explosiveness to be fair... I'm more concerned about the holes he puts us in when he's not exploding... and in that sense he's more like a volcano than my temper.
Well based on the numbers, moving on to Mattison will just make that worse and so would moving on to Chubb, Henry and Walker for that matter.
