I think they overestimated what was left in the tank of some of their favorite players. They will have to acknowledge that at some point they will need to tear it down, or this mediocre wheel will keep turning forever. So far though it hasn't happened in 18 years.

They've been in football by committee mode since they bought the team. If a committee ever achieved greatness it would be news to me. The triangle of authority, their fanboy standing around the locker room all the time which basically leaves a hc and gm with their nuts somewhat cut off--how can you make a tough decision on a player or staff member when your boss is always in there buddying up with everyone? They should stay out except on special occasions. Their heavily corporate structure with a baseball analytics guy at the top. The p.r. happy talk machine that fools the fans into believing.. I could go on but why bother, it hasn't ever changed. Sorry but I don't see the boys who inherited the family fortune as tough, bold visionaries who will build a champion.

Coaching decisions can come within 24 hours, or they can come a few days after the season ends - we've seen both this offseason already...

- Falcons DC Dean Pees announced his retirement within 24 hrs of the regular season ending for Atlanta
- Cleveland fired DC Joe Woods within 24 hrs of the regular season ending for the Browns
- NYJ and OC Mike LaFleur "parted ways" on Thurs 1/11, 3 days after the regular season ended on 1/8

If Donatell retires (something that could happen) or if O'Connell and Donatell decide to "part ways", then it may not happen within 24-48 hrs, but should happen within 72 hrs.

Like I mentioned earlier, with the recently updated Rooney Rule of NFL teams having to interview at least two, external minority candidates for vacant Coordinator positions and some NFL teams already knee-deep in the coaching interview process (including those teams who didn't make the playoffs like the Falcons, Browns & Jets), you really need to decide on significant positions like Coordinators sooner rather than later.

Something I have a hard time seeing, 65 but now with Vic starting to get some looks at a DC job again, i'd have to imagine he would be interested in joining back with him if he does end up losing his job here.

You think demographics will ever trump talent, when it comes to the draft?

And how would that work, exactly, with 71% of NFL players being people of color?

I expect it to be in the middle of the week. I feel like we’re a classy organization and want to do things the right way. Besides sucking at his job, there was never anything else to warrant a harsh split/firing within a day. Let things settle after the loss, after season meetings, discussions, then a split feels like what is happening to me.

Ha! The fact that they didn't even give him the dreaded vote of confidence is starting to worry me. Had they done that then we'd know he was gone. But jeez how has this not happened already? What's there to think about? Is waiting some sort of move to protect Ed's feelings and the precious "culture"? Do they have to notify next of kin first? Man, the lack of a killer instinct exists off the field too I guess.

Both Minnesota’s defensive scheme and personnel warrant analysis, but we’ll start with defensive coordinator Ed Donatell’s system.

The Vikings played more defensive snaps with two-high safeties than any team in the NFL besides the Chiefs. They also played zone coverage more than all but three teams. The ultimate goal, as it was explained often, was to limit deep passes over the top of the coverage.

Minnesota did not achieve that goal. The defense allowed the third-most passes in the league that went 20 or more yards in the air. Complicating things further, the focus the Vikings placed on keeping receivers in front of them opened the door for opponents to feast on short passes, leading to loads of yards after the catch.

Biggest Issue? Donatell, the scheme, or the (lack of) talent? All of the above?

I don't know if this is true or not, but a few other places I've seen people say Ed was only on a 1 year agreement? I've tried looking back at the announcement of his hiring but nothing mentioned a contract length.

If that's true there won't be an actual firing.
