Waiting for the other shoe to drop. Anticipating the ugly. Toying with emotions. Wondering when good times will end because simply, good times don’t last much around here. These are all emotions we have felt as a fan of this team over the years. It’s hard to let go when it feels like a part of your DNA.
This off season, I took a hard look. Being a fan and feeling all the above for 5 decades, I just felt it was a time for change. I knew I couldn’t switch teams, I tried that as a teenager after <insert disappointment>. I have been bleeding purple since I was 5. So if I wasn’t changing teams, then the other option I could come up with was a change in attitude, be positively purple.
It hasn’t been easy. Many times I have text my son during games and he will remind me of my new perspective. It’s worked. Even this past Sunday as we faced a 4th and 18 with the game on the line, I sent him a text saying “I think we get the 4th down”. Damn if they didn’t.
2000 was t easy either. With 3 games left, we were the #1 seed in the NFC at 11-2. The Giants were the #2 seed at 9-4. Win 1 of those last 3 games and the NFC Championship game is at home. Naturally, we closed the regular season 0-3, the Giants went 3-0, we get crushed in New Jersey 44-0, and Giants go to the Super Bowl.
So since this season seems to be redemption time for all that has wronged us in the past decades, my crystal ball is seeing how the regular season ends. It goes like this….
3 weeks left and we are 1 game behind the Eagles in a chase for the home field throughout. Because they own the tiebreaker, we need to finish out a +2 to get that home field.
3rd to last game:
We beat the Giants and Philly loses to Dallas. Our records are now the same but they hold the tiebreaker so still have home field.
2nd to last game:
We beat GB and Philly beats NO. We are still the 2 seed but if we win the last game and Philly loses, we will be the 1 seed.
Last game:
At halftime, as both game will have the same kickoff time, it’s not looking good. We are losing on the road to the Bears by 10. Eagles are beating the Giants by 6.
End of 3Q, we close the gap to 7 and Giants close the gap to 3.
Final 4 minutes of regular season, we take the lead, lose the lead, and score with under a minute to get the win. The Eagles give up a last minute score or an OT score to Giants to lose.
The home field advantage and wildcard weekend bye are ours.
That’s what I see. That’s what I believe because this year, out of all the years, I am being positively purple. I truly believe that the more people that buy into the glow and warmth of the positive light, the more likely it will reflect back on the team’s mojo.
