That's right, it's over. You heard it here first. The Vikings have "mathematically" clinched the division already ... if history is any indication.
Since the merger in 1970, no team has ever blown a 4½ game division lead at any point in a season. The most any team has ever blown was a 3½ game lead ... the 2003 Vikings who were 6-0 with the Packers at 3-4, then something happened in a desert, things got broke, injuries might have been involved, and the rest is history. We're not alone on that list however, the 2009 Broncos also had a 3½ game lead before losing the division by 5 games lol. Yowzers ... ahhh Josh McDaniels, it all makes sense now. The 2013 Saints are also in the 3½ blown club. But we did it first! At-a-boy Tice!
All of those leads were before week 7 however. The biggest lead anyone has blown after week 9 was only 3. The 2008 Broncos blew a 3 game lead with only 3 to play, which got Mike Shanahan fired. Again Broncos? Blowing 3+ game leads in back to back seasons? With 2 different coaches? The Cardinals have also pulled it off after starting 9-1 in 2014, and no Kingsbury wasn't around for that collapse. He was still at Texas Tech not winning with a fella named Patty Mahomes. You might have heard of him.
So there you have it. I believe the cool kids would refer to this lead as insurmountable. Not even Kirk Cousins could screw this up on prime time.
The only thing left is to figure out how big of a lead they can pile up with this kind of luck before the inevitable 38-7 2.0 happens. The record is 9 games by the undefeated 2007 Patriots. The team record belongs to the 1973 Vikings who had a 5½ game lead over the 4-6-1 Lions at 10-1. They ended up winning the division by that same margin. The 1975 team won the division by 5 games, 1976 won by 4½, annnnnd that's it. This is only the 4th time the Vikings have enjoyed a lead this large, and this is the earliest too. That '73 team had a 5 game lead by game 9 (9-0 to the Packers 3-4-2).
As I said, it's over, but the league has rules apparently, so we can make it official as soon as Thanksgiving night against the Patriots. So all we gotta do is win 3 in a row, while the rest of the division goes 1-6 by Thanksgiving (Lions beat the Bears next week). Easy peasy. Book your parties now.
