Philly will have to replace both Coordinators as Arizona hired Philadelphia DC Jonathan Gannon as their next HC - link
Now that all 5 HC vacancies have been filled, a few stats:
- 3 out of the 5 Head Coach hires (60%) were offensive coaches (Payton, Reich & Steichen), continuing the more offensive-minded trend of Head Coach hires. Last offseason, 6 out of the 10 (again, 60%) HC hires were offensive coaches (O'Connell, McDaniel, McDaniels, Daboll, Pederson, Hackett).
- 3 ouf of the 5 HC hires (60%) are 40 or younger, while two (Payton & Reich) are within 1 yr of 60. That follows a similar trend as the previous season when 6 out of the 10 HC hires were in their 40's (or younger) while 4 were in their 50's/60's (Lovie, Pederson, Bowles, Eberflus).
- 3 out of the 5 HC hires (60%) came from teams with winning records the previous season (Gannon & Steichen w/ Philly & Ryans with SF). That's actually down a bit from the previous season as 8 out of 10 (80%) new HC's in 2022 came from teams with a winning record in the previous season; the two that didn't were Pederson (who didn't coach in 2021) and Lovie Smith (Texans stunk in 2021). Payton and Reich were the two this year.
- The NFL might not be too happy that only 1 of the 5 (20%) new HC's is a minority coach (DeMeco Ryans), which is the same % as last season (2 out of 10, Lovie & Todd Bowles). No increase in the amount if minority coaches in the Head Coaching ranks.
- Minority coaches did fare better at the Coordinator level, with 4 out of the 14 (or 29%) new Coordinator hires so far being minority coaches. All 4 were Defensive Coordinators (Flores, Wilks, Joe Woods, Evero) and all Offensive Coordinator hires were non-minority coaches.
