Well - we didn’t do what I said in my week 2 build up. We didn’t run the ball. Our offense got desperate early and our defense spent the first 30 minutes playing scared. It was brutal to watch especially for this almost 50 year fan who for the first time ever is trying to maintain a high level of positivity.
Enough pouting. Let’s get to work. Week 3 is here. Let’s go!
I’m not going to bore you with stats or PFF ratings. This is all rather obvious to me why we will win week 3.
1. We are a veteran team. They have been saying all the right things all week long. I firmly believe that this moment will prove why KOC was needed and even more, why Zim had to go. The culture change will allow for a new process and improved process on how to deal with a game like Monday.
2. Run. We need to run the ball. Plug away. Keep handing it off. Cousins has always been at his best when play action was a real threat. Let Cook and Mattison eat this team up. Let the OLine do what they do best. We have to run.
3. Defense needs to get after it. Stop playing scared. Look, this defense doesn’t need to be top 10 but it has to be top 16. Sitting back and leaving the flats open isnt going to cut it. Pressure Goff and his true nature will be clear.
One more thing, there’s been a lot of praise about Zim this week on how he was right about this thing and right about that player. Let me be clear - Zim could NOT manage the emotions! Period. Full stop. He had zero clue on how to deal with these players on an emotional level.
There are 3 skill sets that make up any athlete; physical, mental, and emotional. Physically, these are all elite players. They know how to pass, catch, block, cover, tackle. Mentally, there all very football smart. They know the X’s & O’s. They know where they need to be and when. Ah, but emotionally, that’s where things separate. many physically and mentally superior players have seen their careers flushed because they did not have the emotional skills to deal.
Zim didn’t really connect emotionally with his players and I think that, more than anything, hurt us the most. I think KOC knows how to relate to these players emotionally and that’s why we will be in a better place come Sunday.
