From what I've heard it's because he just doesn't have the instincts to play in coverage yet, I think it was Alex Boone who mentioned something like that. I think MidwinterViking or somebody else noticed that Asamoah got completely lost on a couple pass plays in a game a few weeks back.
I'm not concerned about him long-term, I think he starts next year as he's got the talent to be a good one. He also only started 2 years in college, so it's understandable that he needs time to come up to speed. As for a guy like Ingram who is 24 and started 4 years in college... I have less patience for a guy like that. We don't have time for him to be like Bradbury, who was also a 24 year old rookie.
1) In retrospect, if you're sending a guy in for one play as a reward for playing strong on special teams, make sure he knows the play and responsibilities.
2) Asamoah's has consistently gotten a few snaps a game on defense in addition to his normal special teams compliment of work. Normally linebackers play 100% of the snaps that call for a LB on the field (i.e. they only come off if the package calls for a CB), the fact that they are subbing Jordan Hicks out for Asamoah on a regular basis in a like for like role suggests they really want Asamoah to develop.
3) I was fortunate to get to watch two recent games close enough where I could see the players coming on and off the field. On the field, everybody is working, they're all mostly business like. Behind the scenes, there are a few guys who stand out as emotional leaders - bringing energy and engaging with fans, Za'Darius Smith and Patrick Peterson are two examples. Brian Asamoah was clearly in this obviously category as well. If you're looking 3 years out and asking "Who will be that emotional heart and soul of the defense?", Asamoah isn't there yet (he doesn't have the standing to be that), but he has the ingredients to be that guy.
All in, I think the needle is pointing up for Asamoah. The general complaints about development of the defense explain most of his mistakes.
