Mond's two picks were disappointing today. He threw a couple of those lofty floaters early on in the Raider game and got away with them. Then on his remaining series, he didn't do that. So I thought that was a good sign. That he learned to stop doing that crap. And then he goes and does it twice tonight. Two more underthrown floaters that this time ended up picks. He's got the arm strength to be better and it wasn't a lack of decisiveness on those but just that they were terrible throws. Kirk is fairly masterful on throws like that where only his guy can get it. If he actually executes those throws properly then they're reasonable deep shots that are incomplete worst case.
His recognition of how much air to put under the ball is his biggest issue that I can see. Yes he made a couple of bad decisions but by and large it was his decision making but his experience or lack thereof which led to a couple of poor throws.
He's far from ready to be a starter but I'm more bullish on his potential than I was prior to these last two games. Mannion isn't better. And they definitely need someone else in the QB room but if Kirk gets hurt or the season doesn't start out well and the team is like 4-8 in their first 12 games, I'd let Mond cut his teeth the rest of the way.
It's not like the kid just learned to be a QB last year. He's been a QB for pretty much all of his life, and if he doesn't know when to throw a lofty pass and when to rifle one in with a low trajectory, I don't know how many more years it will take him to learn that.
If he's a college QB, you say "Sure, let's be patient", but this is his 2nd year in the NFL and if he's going to provide value on his rookie contract it will be in 2023 (his final year of his three year contract). How do you expect a QB of his status right now to grow enough to be a GOOD starting QB next year? There is almost no chance he's good next year with the limited reps he gets if Cousins stays healthy.
He was a wasted third round pick. He wasn't even a great QB in college.
