It was odd to see them ditch Mayfield after there was talk about an extension over the 2021 offseason - but I thought it was mostly clear that Mayfield's horrid play in 2021 was caused by his torn labrum and other injuries that he tried to tough out. Their team doctors should have shut him down for a spell, and instead Baker tried to play through it. While I don't think he has a very high ceiling, I think he can revert back to his 2020 form in 2022... I understand going all-in for a QB of Watson's caliber and getting off Mayfield. It'd be far more understandable if they made the move for Russell Wilson.

You mean character-wise? Because QB-wise they aren't that similar - Watson is leagues beyond Vick as a passer and Vick was far more elusive as a runner.

Watson deserves what he gets. The Browns organization deserves this as well giving away so much while knowing this was a very real possibility. The real losers in all this mess, aside from the victims, is the Browns fans. Talk about an abused fan base. They can't catch a break with their ownership and front office blunders. Decades of poor choices.

If being a Viking fan was easy ~ everyone would do it.

I don't feel sorry for Cleveland at all, though having a lot of Cleveland friends living there, I do feel sorry for the fans who are getting screwed once again. The Browns seriously have one of the worst ownership groups in the NFL. That was a hefty price to pay for Watson, and I'm not sure I pay it if he didn't have the sexual assault allegations hanging over his head. They paid it, extended him, and even worked the contract in such a way to ensure he's not harmed by his suspension. The only smart move was that if he's suspended a year, the contract tolls meaning his cap hit gets lessened and he's on the hook for a 1M base salary in 2023.

It will be interesting to see where Mayfield lands. The Browns gave up on him way too soon. That probably says more for how Baker conducts himself internally, because that labrum injury completely explains the drop off from 2020 to 2021. I don't know Baker's ceiling, but I would be surprised at all if Baker continues to progress while Watson doesn't... minus of course all those picks to build talent around him.

Man, that would be dirty. But, Cleveland changes HCs like people change underwear, so I could see it. That'd be messed up, though. But after how they did Mayfield and this stuff with Watson, should anything really surprise us?

Also, I'm still confused on why Seattle didn't stick with Wilson and try with a new coaching staff. How in the heck does Carroll get to be part of that rebuild? That's never not going to be confusing to me. Wilson vs. Carroll, you pick Wilson or neither, but never just Carroll ... and I like Carroll.

It's really my prediction of how each is going to play out over their NFL careers. Yeah, character is a factor, but IMO Watson is mindful of Vick in that both had tremendous talent and flashed tremendously early, but both sidelined their careers with poor judgment off-field, right in their prime age. I suppose Watson won't go to prison like Vick - but therefore he's more likely to repeat his offenses in the future.

As long as Judge Robinson suspends Watson for at least one game, it gives Goodell the ability to lengthen the suspension.

Since it is pretty obvious the league is looking for a year's suspension...they are probably just hoping Robinson says 6-10, and Goodell will lengthen it to 17 "to protect the Shield".

Let's see if Goodell does anything based on the public opinion that happens in the next few days. My guess is if the 24/7 news cycle "buries" this a bit and the general public "moves on", then Goodell will just let it go without anything further.

But if this lingers in the sportsworld spotlight - and into Thursday's opening preseason HOF game - and possibly creeps into HOF weekend a bit, I would expect Goodell to up the punishment and then Watson's team will file an appeal.
