NFCN Quarterbacks 2022

Rodgers > Cousins > Goff > Fields?  Sure.  But it looks like they just ranked them based on last year's passer rating, which seems like something of a oversimplification for the NFCN, where three of four have fairly significant potential for changes.

Aaron Rodgers
Best Case: Rodgers is who the national media think he is and experiences no drop-off in play due to age or receiver turnover.
Worst Case: It turns out replacing the 1,983 receiving yards lost between Adams and Valdes-Scantling matters.  Christian Watson turns out be a fast kid who was playing against competition roughly as talented as a good Texas class 6A high school and struggles to make the transition to the NFL in his first year.  Sammy Watkins is actually just a guy who has had one 1,000 yard season in 8 tries (1,047 yards in 2015... remember 2015?  That was when Adrian Peterson was an All-Pro and carried Teddy Bridgewater and co. to an 11-5 record).  At 39 years old, Aaron Rodgers loses half a step of mobility and ability to extend plays.
Midpoint: The problem with Rodgers is that his range of potential outcomes is enormous.  Even if I'm generous and say there is a 75% chance Rodgers experiences no falloff whatsoever, the down side of all those other things is pretty far down.  So 75% chance of a great season, and 25% chance of precipitous, catastrophic fall into ruination [knocks on wood].

Kirk Cousins 
Best Case: The short passing game design by Klint Kubiak in 2021 was horrific, updating that to something more like the Rams offense last year year lifts the offense.  O'Connell keeps the best parts of Cousins deep passing game intact.  
Worst Case: Kubiak knew that the best part of Cousins game was he deep ball and designing a bunch of obvious (but stupid) short stuff to draw in the defense and hit the long ball was the best use of Cousins talents.  O'Connell changes this, hurts the deep passing game with no short game upside.  Offensive line shows no improvement.  
Midpoint: Another wide range of outcomes, the best case is Cousins challenging for the #1 spot in the division and the worst case is bad fall off.  However, Cousins advantage over Rodgers is there is something very clear to point at (short passing game design) and think "this should be better".

Jared Goff
Best Case: The real Jared Goff is the guy who had an 11-2 TD to INT ratio in his last five games while going 3-2.
Worst Case: The real Jared Goff is the guy who hasn't thrown more than 22 TDs in any of the past 3 years.
Midpoint: Even in his best case scenario, Goff is the 3rd best QB in the division.  Goff is the one with limited potential for variation.

Justin Fields 
Best Case: It wasn't Fields sucking last year, it was poor coaching and lack of talent.  He can improve in his 2nd year.
Worst Case: I remind everybody that Justin Fields prospect ranking on NFL.com was 6.45; that does not compare favorably to other recent 1st round QBs for the Bears (Mitchel Trubisky - 7.00) or from Ohio State (Dwayne Haskins - 6.70) and Fields is actually worse than both of them.
Midpoint: It's not like Chicago added a lot of talent, and Nagy did coax some improvement out of Trubisky, so a lot of this hangs on Fields getting better.  Even if he does improve, last year was bad enough that this looks like a multi-year path out of the basement for Fields.  Even Josh Allen took 3 years to really arrive.

Assuming Rodgers doesn't regress physically significantly we kind of already know what a Rodgers offense looks like with less than ideal WRs. In 2015, his #1 WR was a guy who could not make the roster of any other team in the NFL, Cobb was declining and Adams was still learning how to play the position.

That offense ended up being slightly above average in scoring, Rodgers' depth of target plummeted, and while he threw 31 TDs, it was a down year for him. It was his lowest completion percentage, passer rated, YPA and YPG of his career.

Justin Fields is probably not an NFL calibur quarterback. Bears keep missing at this position.

go back and watch the tape.  JJ missed a bunch of routes and could get even better.  Without Kirk he's a good not great WR.  With Rodgers he's probably Jerry Rice.  But to say that JJ has suffered because of kirk is ludicrous.  

Rodgers' record in those 12 games is 9-3; and his record vs other NFCN QBs is:
Justin Fields: 2-0
Matthew Stafford: 2-0
Mitchell Trubisky: 2-0
Sean Manion: 1-0
Jerod Goff: 1-1
Kirk Cousins: 1-2

The question there being just how much influence did Zimmer have over what he'd ALLOW Cousins to do...and thus how much difference NOT being under Zimmer's thumb will make.

There are FAR more people that prefer Cousins over other scenarios available (paying huge to get someone like Watson, tearing things down and doing a full rebuild)...not so much 'loving' Cousins. None of us know how Kirk changes with someone like KOC in his ear vs someone like Zimmer........one group or the other (those OK/preferring the route they went vs those hating it) will likely feel differently by mid-season or so.
