Some stuff in the ether/interwebs about this kid that bothers me.
He had arguably the greatest Freshman season at any position ever. His tape competing against Chase (who is frankly better than JJ) in practice is the stuff of legends.
So what was he supposed to do in a COVID shortened season in which he missed time with a non-Rona illness? Become Deion Sanders part 2? I was at FSU with Prime Time and he wasn't great every year.
PFF has an article out refuting the notion that even played worse the next two years.
But even if he did, so what? He could have been working on refining technique instead of just relying on sheer athleticism. He could have let the press go to his head. His motivation might have slacked after LSU fired Ogeron.
Other than Derek himself, one of the few people that would have real insight into the reason (or reasons) for any regression is Daronte Jones. He would have seen Stingley with a fresh set of eyes coming from the Vikings to LSU last year.
If Jones signs off on the mental makeup of this kid I'm all in on picking him should he slide.
The other aspect is the medical stuff. A low-ankle sprain that he aggravated again later his sophomore season isn't a real concern. The Lisfranc is a bigger one. But I actually trust the new Athletic Trainer that came over from the Rams, who were uncommonly healthy the last few years. If Williams gives him a clean bill of health that's good enough for me.
Ultimately, I don't expect Stingley to make it to #12. If he does and Kwesi passes we'll have a pretty good idea that either Jones didn't sign off on his mental makeup or Williams had concerns about his long-term health.
But if he is the pick I fully expect many here to lose their minds because a Freshman Phenom didn't repeat that success in either a COVID-shortened nor an injury-shortened season. If he had Minnesota would have zero shot at him. Zero. Worth the risk to get a potential Top 5 Player at #12 in my mind versus a 'safe' high floor/low ceiling kid.
Why? In this Draft there are almost no Blue Chip kids and about 120 high floor/low ceiling kids. I'm taking the swing on getting one of the kids that has actually shown Blue Chip production knowing that my next 2 picks should result in good, but not great players.
