Great work as always, MidwinterViking .
You know, when I first read this, it made me want to get greedy and get a top WR in this year's draft. I've since come to my senses and still want to go DL or DB, but probably wouldn't cry if we went WR. Then again, do we trust that KJ, Bisi, Irv, and ISM can step up? Maybe. I definitely want to do more for our secondary and trenches, but another elite talent at WR is at least a little tempting if things fall that way. I respect McCardell's message - and overall agree - but we'll see.
There is a narrative that is forgotten... the Story of the Rams 2021 offense is that Odell Beckham was able to replace the production of Robert Woods. While that's true from a box score perspective, the Rams signed Beckham on 11/12 before Woods tore his ACL against the 49ers on 11/15. So what the Rams really wanted was a 4 WR line up - that could match really well against what the Vikings can field:
Odell Beckham jr. (Justin Jefferson - Because Beckham played more down field)
Cooper Kupp (Adam Thielen because Kupp played more underneath)
Robert Woods (Simth-Marsette? Could this be Garret Wilson or Jameson Williams)
Van Jefferson (KJ Osborn)
Tyler Higbee (Irv Smith)
Sony Michel (Dalvin Cook)
Instead Woods blows out his ACL, Beckham & Woods never get to play together and Ben Skowronek ends up playing 30-50% of the snaps down the stretch while the Rams frequently split their RBs out wide because they never had the WR corps they really wanted.
If the Vikings do go WR at 12 (or 46), it could say more about Mattison and Nwangwu as it does about Osborn. And if O'Connell telling the truth, about "not being in 11 personnel as much as people think" that might also mean "we're going 4 wide with 1 RB or TE! what? You think we'd be better off with another Lurch out there on the field?"
Rams Example #2 - The out route to Darrell Henderson in the flat. On that play Henderson was split out in the slot. He didn't motion out there from the backfield, he just played receiver. At best, that fooled the defense into having slightly different personnel on the field, but a linebacker on Darrell Henderson isn't a huge miss-match, it's probably favorable, but not game breaking. Now look at that play again and imagine that, instead of Henderson in the flat coming out of the slot, that is Jameson Williams - who can turn that catch inside or outside with roadrunner vs Wile E. Coyote type speed.
Rams Example #4 - The deep shot breakdown. This time put Garrett Wilson (or Jameson Williams, whatever your heart tells you) in the shoes of Kendal Blanton. That play worked on with Kendal Blanton pulling coverage deep.... BUT... Kendal friggin Blanton has a 40 time of 4.95 seconds. I'm pretty sure refs throw a flag for delay of game if anyone runs a deep route with a 40 time of 5 seconds. Christian Darrisaw has a 40 time of 4.89. Let that sink in for a second. The Cardinals are defending that play as if they are covering someone about as fast (not quite though) as our left tackle. What does that play look like if the Ferrari know as Garrett Wilson is out there with his 4.38 speed?
