I don't see Wonnum as ascending at all. All of his sacks came from busted O-Line pickups on Stunts where he got a free run on a QB or when he chased down Fields, who so far is terrible at field awareness when flushed from the pocket.
This is the same dude who got moved out of his run fit by a damn Slot Receiver.
He's got the arm length and a few other Hunter-esque attributes but explosiveness and bend are not among them. He was near the bottom of the League in pressure rate for how many snaps he got.
Did I mention he's horrible at setting a hard edge against the run? Wasn't that one of the first things Donatell said he was going to make sure his Defense does?
The kid was universally regarded as a reach where Slick picked him. Patrick Jones was not. Infinitely more productive in college. And Janarius Robinson actually has more of a Hunter-esque athletic profile than Wonnum.
Hell, I'd even put Willekes above him as 'clay that could maybe be developed'. But I'm banking on exactly zero of those doing anything meaningful at all if Z or Hunter gets hurt.
That's why Edge is so important in this Draft. Neither Hunter nor Z are signed long-term. This is the year to get an heir apparent. One that should get plenty of snaps as a Rookie in obvious passing downs so Z can roam and attack from between the Tackles.
As for the run, the entire defense sucked at stopping or should I say waving the red cape and shouting 'ole! I'm not going to pin that on him.
I'm not throwing in the towel on him, but you can.
But maybe you're right. They've talked to edge rushers leading up to the draft.
I can absolutely say that. Any single Professional Football Player can register a sack when he comes unblocked on a stunt. I'm sure you could too. The sacks on Fields are actually more laudable even those Fields often looks like a newborn calf getting it's legs under it for the first time when he scrambles.
I have hope for everyone. But I do tend to rank that hope vs. actual production and measurables. DJ just feels like the least likely to stick after what we've seen to date. He wasn't exactly a standout LB in college. Jones has much better collegiate production. Robinson has better athletic traits. Willekes seems to have a better motor and football instincts.
But man, if Ed turns Wonnum into a legit asset that really helps Kwesi. I will root for him but won't get my Hope's up.
