He's actually one of my "main focus" players this time 'round, because if he's all the way back...he should finally be the weapon we've been waiting to see.
@au_mschmidt Does it make sense to extend Irv Smith if he has good season? He’s undersized, not great at blocking. If he is a slow 3rd ‘receiver,’ why not go with actual receiver? What would be the cost?
I think it does, yes. The price of a good tight end isn’t all that expensive relative to other positions. The top guy in the league is only making $15 million. If Irv is good but not Kittle/Kelce good, he probably gets around $10 million per year. That’s reasonable for a mismatch weapon. As far as his blocking, he’s graded as an average run blocker the last two years, which is fine. Being dominate would be great i.e. Gronk but it’s more about not being a disaster.
