Stats were never the issue, and its funny Matthew (who I honestly like most of his takes) is crediting Kirks "success" of JJ , but mostly bashes Kirk and doesnt think hell ever be the guy. Josh Allen was very raw coming out, obviously Diggs is a great player and going to help any team but that has nothing to do with Josh success now as a player. He improved his accuracy and decision making greatly.
It's something the Kirkistans either choose to ignore while they're busy reading boxscores or they themselves lack an "it" factor when it comes to understanding that it takes more than numbers to win at this level. You'd think Kirks lifetime .500 record, after a decade of playing with multiple teams, for a handful of coaches, in a variety of schemes, despite the HoF numbers, would be enough evidence of that. Blame Zimmer all you want, but he worked with a ton of offensive minded guys in Washington who couldn't turn him into a winner either.
He doesn't have the mental fortitude to win 4 consecutive pressure packed games in January, and O'Connell holding his hand isn't going to change that fact. He can't go out there and throw the football for him when the IOL is collapsing into his lap over and over against the best front 7's in football. An IOL that the new regime did the bare minimum to address btw.
The playoffs are about chaos management not stats, and the teams/QB's that can best manage that chaos are usually the ones that end up winning championships. So combine the fact that our IOL is still hot garbage, and Cousins is demonstrably one of the worst QB's when it comes to handling pressure and chaos, it's not difficult to do the math on this equation. O'Connell might turn out to be a great HC, but he's not a god, and he's not going to create the 4 perfect condition games necessary in January to win a Super Bowl with Cousins.
I guess we just gotta hope JJ cares more about his stats than winning too, because I have no doubt he's going to put up some eye popping numbers the next 2 years, but he's not going to sniff a Super Bowl like his boys in Cincinnati anytime soon. And maybe he won't be interested in being part of any rebuild in 2 years after the "crash n burn" tour makes him want out of Minnesota like every star WR before him, and we won't have to pay him $40m/y either. Win/win.
Kirk can barely win 4 games in September. This team remains a joke due to its loyalty to the biggest conman in pro sports
