If the Vikings ended up getting a 1st and a 2nd for Hunter and Cousins at some point this season, would that change anyone's mind about the GM? It would mean they didn't waste 60+ million in cap on two players who had no future on the team and actually got something of value that might help them in rebuild.
That's a return which is much higher than I personally expect to see, so it would definitely make me think KAM negotiated well. A lot of people here, myself included, formed an opinion of KAM's trading based on the 2022 draft trade. He did better in the trade for Hockenson.
It would change a lot of opinions here just because so many want to see Kirk gone and that would make KAM the man who achieved that. That said, there seem to be people who think Cousins is terrible, but that he should nonetheless bring a great return in trade.
Getting a 1st-round pick for Hunter now seems possible to me, especially if he maintains his fast start. A 2nd for Kirk would be fine to me - we're going to get a late 3rd comp pick if he leaves as a free agent. But I doubt everyone, even the biggest Kirk haters, would be happy.
I just don't think a midseason Cousins trade will happen:
1. It's just such an obvious "give up the season" move that even the most casual fan will see that we've quit.
2. It would make key players unhappy. If JJ's extension had been done already, this might not matter.
3. There are few teams who would try to acquire a new starting QB midseason, not enough to generate any bidding.
4. I still don't think Cousins would drop his NTC.
Think about it from Cousins' standpoint.
If traded:
Starting with new playbook and receivers midseason will likely reduce his performance.
Go to a team he didn't choose (at least, not from the full NFL), move family etc.
Maybe have a shot at a championship. Big maybe.
Still need to negotiate new deal with that team or hit free agency after this season anyway.
Finish 2023 with Vikings:
Continue on team he knows and likely run up huge 2023 stats - we have no running game and KOC loves to pass.
In free agency, he picks his team and negotiates a new deal.
Have a shot at a championship if that's important and he picks the right team.
He added the NTC for a reason; I expect he will use it. Most likely Kirk has already made it known we may as well not consider any trade offers involving him.
