That said the times you were referring to were also the times that everyone said we were “only a QB away” from a championship. We had that situation during the TJack era and brought in Brett. Zero trophies.
Bringing in Favre brought us from 10-6 to 13-3, and the offense from 12th in points to 2nd. I would 100% sign up for a move like that if the QB makes the team that dramatically better.
Bringing in Cousins brought us from 13-3 to 8-7-1, and the offense from 10th in points to 19th. Also 8th in points per drive to 24th...
And yes, Favre's expiration date hit in 2010. We were awful that year, which seems to be something you want to avoid... and yet, we were back in the playoffs in 2012. That's a bigger gap between the 2019 playoffs and now! We didn't became the Lions/Browns/Jets then, and we won't if we trade Cousins and go after a rookie QB.
I want them to keep Kirk until they find one that’s better. And when they do I will welcome them.
So wait a minute- on one hand I’m hearing people say that the playoffs is not good enough and we want a SB win. Brett didn’t win us a SB even though “ the pieces were in place”. I wasn’t comparing Kirk to Brett. That’s silly. I was illustrating how incredibly difficult it is to win a SB even with “pieces in place”.
And I’m not avoiding 2010 at all. That is more of an example that a HOF QB can’t even elevate a roster that is in decline as often happens after a team peaks just like it did in 2018, 2010 and 1999. Every team is different so to say 2018 needed to be better than 2017 is not an argument that carries any water.
We did get back into the playoffs in 2012- with Ponder and Webb. Is that your template? I’m not interested in that type of QB situation. Did it lead to a championship or long term stability? If not then it’s really not a good example of a pattern we should follow.
Serious question- where did you arrive at the conclusion that I don’t want to draft a QB or do anything unless the team implodes? I have stated categorically in nearly every response to people like you who don’t read my posts and throw all sorts of wild speculation about me that I welcome the team drafting a replacement or bringing in a better option if they find one. So far they haven’t done it. So your whole point doesn’t make sense.
And the Alex Smith and Mahomes tract is actually exactly what I think they should do. They had smith on the roster and drafted Mahomes and moved on to him when they knew what they had. That was smart. What’s dumb is dumping the guy you have before you know what the next guy will be like. That’s when you get a Tjack, Ponde, Teddy that causes you to reach after giving them a few years with no real competition to prove they are worth it. We should absolutely bring in players to push Kirk and make him either earn his spot or give it up to them.
