But he is plenty good enough to win it all with if the GM and coaches can build the rest of the team to where it needs to be. For those wanting Cousins gone I've thought to myself that old saying, "be careful what you wish for... you may just get it." A team can languish in QB hell for decades. Drafting a QB better than Kirk Cousins is not easy.

I "like" the creative math. Before the extension, he had one year left at a guaranteed base salary of $35M. We added one more year for another $35M guaranteed. That is a zero raise from 2022 to 2023. I'm not, but last I checked 40M > 35M, leaving Kirk with a 5M raise between two seasons. That's not as much as I expected him to ask for, and I figured he'd not sign that deal. I suspect he may have seen what teams were willing to trade for him and realized he'd be taking a pay cut next year and decided to bet on them/him.

Correct, and the more cap space a quarterback takes, the less money for people around him. It is hard enough for a good team to go to or win a Super Bowl, handcuffing the team with a cap crunch makes it all the less likely.

They are. There should be a cap on what any one player can make in the NFL, but the players association has not figured out that quarterbacks are taking money out of other players' pockets.

If the Bucs and Brady don't sign a new contract, reports are he will be working under the old one. Brady is slated to make a bit over $27.27 million with incentives. His cap hit for the 2022 NFL season is $20,270,588.

Where are you getting $40M? They gave him $35M more in guaranteed money and added one (real) year to the contract. If you want to look at the numbers after the cap shenanigans, his base salary in both 2022 and 2023 is now $15M. Just look at the total cash and don't get hung up on the cap strategies. We gave the man $35M more for one more year any way you look at it. His remaining contract prior to extension was $35M for one year (2022). $35M minus $35M still equals zero raise year over year. I know that you and all but perhaps one other poster are good enough at math to follow that. It's not complicated.

Well, like the saying goes, "it's good to be king." If the Wilfs are behind us having and keeping Kirk, then I applaud them. He's a solid performer and he doesn't beat or otherwise abuse other people. Modern day Randall Cunningham (another of my Viking favorites).

Yeah, because immediate upgrades at QB are readily available upon request. Starting to hate the Wilfs more and more.

If the Wilfs are actually the reason for this and plan to continue this approach the franchise is in serious trouble. Owners that don't know football forcing the team to make decisions in order to "compete" in their eyes. That's really bad if it's true imo, I have to hope they learn from this mistake if it is truly how it played out.

Unfortunately I think that's probably what happened to an extent because I can't imagine a competent GM coming in and seeing a team that missed the playoffs 2 years straight with more cap issues now than those seasons and tripling down on the strategy that lead to it/got the last regime fired.
