Good work! It looks like the "top heavy roster" trope doesn't hold water when looking at this study - it seems to be inevitable that a small group of guys are going to take up big chunks of cap, it just depends how good those guys are.
I am hoping that KAM will focus spending money on more important positions (OL, CB, WR, DE) rather than loading up on less efficient positions that Rick liked to (RB, LB, S).
I can't help but agree with Uncle here, 4 of the 5 of our 'stars' are going to be 30 or older, all out of their prime except for Hunter.
O'Neill is a good RT, but I feel like our fanbase as a whole is overrating him somewhat. Pierce is not dependable and likely getting cut, while Tomlinson not only didn't fit the role of 3T as hoped, but he also wasn't as good against the run as we thought. I think he'll improve in our new 3-4 defense, but I can't help but be disappointed.
In the past 20 years they have had more season that, according to advanced metrics, qualify as WTB seasons (With Tom Brady as QB1). In their 19 qualified WTB seasons, they managed 6 Super Bowls, or 31%. Interestingly 95.4% of Tom Brady's season measure as WTB season,he has the highest WTB measurement of any NFL team in history and he won Super Bowls in 33% of those seasons, better than the Patriots average. Even the Bucs had 2 seasons that qualified as WTB and had a 50% Super Bowl win rate in them - and the Bucs are ass, they come from ass and to ass they will return, forever ass, amen. In their last 2 seasons that did not qualify as WTB, the Patriots were a pedestrian 17-17 including playoffs.
No mention of Bill Belichick, quite possibly the best NFL coach of all time, and head of a insanely competent development staff that was so good at developing players at one point that they didn't need to sign their own guys to big contracts? That's just silly talk.
I figured you'd be on the case, seeing that Brady is getting too much credit here!

So what that says is that the 5 "stars" that are taking up at least 6% of the Viking's 2022 overall cap performance at a level in 2021 below that player's "star" level threshold. Hunter was hurt for at least half the 2021 season, but Cousins, Thielen, Kendricks and H Smith all performed below what they will cost against the 2022 cap...are they really "current" stars heading into 2022, or is their 2022 cost against the cap more related to their past performance? It's definitely concerning and something will need to be done with all of their cap hits in 2022.

Brian ONiell will become a Star next season. Dalvin Cook is solid. Darrisaw is early but if he improves between his rookie and 2nd season, he will be trending towards that high value LT many of those 5 star teams had. Irv Smith has potential to over perform. Tomlinson and Pierce are also in the not stars, but dependable category.

Patriots suck. They're paper tigers.

Yeah, okay.
