Bud prefers Kirk

Well I mean you do every day in practice. I’m pretty sure if Mond was playing better than z Kirk in practice then we would be hearing about it or things w you’ll be proceeding different

I was thinking Mannion would be next up behind Kirk. 
I guess we will see if Mond claims a roster spot or the practice squad.
At least he has someone working with him this year.

Mond was not getting more than a few snaps with the starters in practice. What was he supposed to show?

Now we have this kid as head coach who thinks he can change Cousins. I hope the new staff can, but Kirk is so slow at reads that this new offense may just make his head explode. It will be like watching a new season of The Boys.

While it's true that QB's don't have to play at a HOF level to reach and win the Super Bowl, a significant difference between Stafford and Cousins is that Stafford doesn't take up nearly as much against his team's cap as Cousins, while providing similar on-field production:

Bud is suggesting that Cousins doesn't have to play at Stafford's level while accounting for nearly double against the team's cap space, which hinders the team's ability to surround Cousins with key players. Cousin's cap compared to Stafford suggests that Kirk can play at a higher level since he takes up more space, but OTC's 2021 valuation suggests both players are playing at a similar level, so Stafford provides the better overall value to his team.

While Cousins didn't have a good defense to rely on in 2020 and 2021,the Vikings did have a solid defense when Cousins took over the starting QB job in 2018. The Vikings were one of the top defenses in the NFL following the 2017 season and were ranked in the Top 10 in both the 2018/2019 seasons during Kirk's first 2 seasons. The result was 1 playoff appearance, 1 playoff win.

There's no doubt one of Cousins' best traits is his durability - he has not been injured and has been extremely reliable. But that really isn't the key question...the key question is: does he provide the team enough value while he's on the field to warrant that size slice of the team's cap space? Does his play make up for the lack of other key players the team could have if he wasn't taking up so much space?

For me, the answer to that question has been "no"; while Cousins is very durable, reliable and a solid QB, the amount of cap space and contract he has commanded in the past and will command in the future (if he signs an extension with Minnesota) is detrimental due to Cousin's not providing enough value while on the field. And while there are ways to lower Cousin's cap hit in 2022 if he does sign an extension, the Vikings have already done that (in the 2020 offseason) and it didn't result in the Vikings being anywhere close to a contender.
