I sat and thought a lot about this one today because I wanted Harbaugh as well. O' Connell was the finalist I wanted before Harbaugh truly came into the picture. So I feel compelled to give my two cents from being around culture building leadership roles.
The Vikings Have a Vision:
Mark Wilf gave a very strong statement before they started this process that they knew what they wanted the Vikings to look like moving forward. They talked to their internal leadership staff, their leadership team of players and no doubt outside people to gather information to help with what they need moving forward. With all these conversations they identified what they see the Vikings looking in the future.
They then identified candidates that fit this vision.
Then the shiny object came into play and it would have been so easy to deviate from what they originally set out as the vision of the Vikings moving forward.
But instead of chasing that shiny object they said, no, this doesn't fit what we want this to look like and stayed steadfast on that Vision.
I am not saying that it will work out but I commend them for sticking to it.
In the words of a top non football GM "stick to the plan, stick to the plan, stick to the plan". He said this because he knew there were going to be opportunities to make the team better in the short term that would be enticing but would hurt its overall long term vision.
Having a vision is easy, sticking to plan to get there is hard.
