Are we already assuming that Mond can't be the QB of the future? And if so that seems pretty quick. This years QB class kinda sucks so what are the odds we grab a 2nd round guy this year that'll be ready for next year? Or ever.
There's more risk in some idealist plan that we'll have a franchise QB in a couple years. If Kwesi is a numbers guy and is all about making decisions under uncertainty, then the likely bet will be keeping Kirk for a couple more years (up to 3), kicking some dead money down the road, creating some cap space, creating some time for the future QB to develop, and keeping the team competitive in the meantime.
Maybe Kwesi doesn't take the path of lowest risk here but trading Kirk is essentially giving up on a roster that - even with all it's nits - went 8-9 with only one loss by more than one score. And a ton of those losses were to playoff teams.
I would wager that he's more likely looking at the current roster as repairable than one that needs a complete rebuild. He can deal with the aftermath of giving it a run two years from now.
Good post. I think in regards to your Mond question, I’m willing to bet he doesn’t develop into THE QB of the future for us. A 3rd round pick usually doesn’t have tons of upside in the first place and he got less than stellar reviews from reporters who saw practice…and the coach! I am still hopeful he could develop into a Tyrod Taylor or the backup in Baltimore Huntley type player. Those guys are extremely valuable on cheap contracts even if they’re not the guy you build around.
