Minnesota Vikings fans like to complain about our horrible luck with the playoffs, but in reality, the whole NFC North sucks when it comes to the playoffs.
There are four divisions in the NFC (starting in 2002).
This is the 20th post-season with the 4 team format.
With a 4 team format, the NFC North should have a Super Bowl representative once every 4 years.
With 20 years in this format, the average would be for the NFC North to have been in the Super Bowl 5 (five) times since 2002.
They have only appeared in 2 Super Bowls during that period. (Bears in 2006 (lost Super Bowl)). And Green Bay in 2010.
On average, every other year a NFC north team should be in the NFC Championship game by average.
Since 2002, we have had 10 appearances by NFC North teams. That's right on average!
Problem is, NFC North teams are a collective 2-8 in those 10 appearances. One of those wins was over another NFC North team (Green Bay over the Caleb Henne led Bears). So in that 20 year period, an NFC North team has only won over a non-divisional opponent in the NFC Title game once.
3 Divisions (prior to 2002)
Prior to 2001, there were only three divisions. An NFC Central team should have made the NFC Championship game two out of every three years on average. (66.6% of the years)
For the 25 years from 1977 to 2001, there were 50 teams in the NFC Championship game with 25 winners. Did the NFC north advance to the Super Bowl about 8 times? No.
They advanced only 3 times out of 13 appearances for a record of 3-10 in those NFC title games.
Next time you are thinking about betting on some NFC playoff games, be sure to bet against the North.
