Vikes are $11+ million over the cap at present. Spotrac tool is good for seeing how much cap room you save by cutting a player. Problem is, most places the Vikings might look to save money doesn't provide much cap relief. And then you still have to sign your rookie class, and fill some free agency departures. Some guys at the bottom of the lineup that don't really contribute can be cut easily, but you'll probably have to replace them with a young player with a cap number maybe only $100K or $200K less than the bottom of the roster guys you are cutting to save cap space. Note that some guys on the 2021 squad, like Peterson and Xavier Woods, do not show up on the 2022 list and therefore we save no additional cap space on their salaries. Assuming they aren't re-signed, Barr and Richardson will add $11M of dead cap money. Not sure what Barr's value on the open market is, but considering you'll save no cap room by letting him walk, I wonder if you can re-sign him for one year at $9.9M and not add anything else to the cap.
The Spotrac site also has icons attached to some of these contracts that allows converting the base salary to the minimum, which seems to lessen the cap hit of some players like Thielen. Not sure if that is just re-structuring the deal to give the player the same cash, but get around some cap rules, but we may be able to get some relief there. But it may come down to the Vikings having to release one or two highly paid players to save enough cap room for the team to function in 2022. For instance, Hunter has a 2022 cap hit of $26M...but if released, his dead cap money would only be $7.5M...a real savings of $18.5M. I wouldn't want to release a young player of Hunter's caliber, but there may have to be ugly choices made. Unless they are able to extend and restructure, Cousins is going to count the full $45M against the cap.
So what do you think the Vikings can/will/should do to get under the cap, sign some free agents (not dreaming big here) and sign the rookie class?
