Here is a quick recap from r/minnesotavikings:
Spielman on Move The Sticks podcast recap by HowlAtchaBoy
Just listened. Give it a listen yourself it’s not long and decently interesting albeit not juicy. But if you want the cliff’s notes:
did not talk about getting fired directly but joked about not having anything to do
did not talk about Zim other than what he looked for when he hired him. Said hiring coaches depends on the situation and the Vikings players needed and wanted accountability
talked about missing on QBs in his career (you’ve probably seen the pull quote on the board) and he was essentially saying being intelligent doesn’t make you process football fast in the moment. He was 100% talking about Ponder IMO.
talked about going to scout players live and watching them on the sidelines. Said Matt Ryan was incredible in engaging and galvanizing teammates. He looked for that
talked about drafting great WRs and the traits that go into finding one - not losing speed in and out of breaks, willingness to be coached, maturity, flexibility to adjust to catch the ball
talked about using VR to get QBs reps and even potentially using it to test QB prospects on their reads, reaction, and eyes. Cool idea
Most interesting: Would not offer any players by names that he liked in this draft when asked. Makes me think he’s thinking hard about getting a job in the league this year and not sitting out
Talked about meshing drafting to the coach’s scheme and really deferring to the coaching staff. Scouts bring in the evaluations, coaches tell him why the player will or will not work. Made me think he maybe have deferred too much and got burned. Also, maybe he got hits this way too, who knows?
But we know Patterson always got his fav mid to late round DE or DL (I.e. begging for Wonnum), Gary Kubiak loved Bradbury and Jefferson and that Adam Zimmer loved Troy Dye, etc. so coaching staff had draft pull.
I think Rick is a genuine guy who loves scouting and football. 16 years in one org is incredible. Made a ton of great picks, missed on some of course. He cared, was willing to learn. But it was time. Best to hit in the future.
