I know Belichick employees this philosophy and if we go this route then we're going to need to hit on the draft picks we get in return. Dalvin is one of the top 3 backs in the league, and Mattison isn't even in the same stratosphere in terms of being a homerun threat and forcing defenses to gameplan for him. Nwangwu showed flashes but I'm not confident the 2 could fill the void left by Cook.
And if the McVay coaching tree holds true to form, (Greenbay, Cinci, and the Chargers), there's no reason to think we won't have some level of success right out of the gate with O'Connell. And if we do, we'll need guys like Cook and Thielen to compete at a higher level.
I understand the compulsion to purge the roster in the hopes of getting impactful youth, but that's a massive gamble when you're relying on an entirely new front office that's never been ultimately responsible for pulling the trigger on draft picks.
Who's to say we don't draft a competent QB?
But if we don't and still trade Kirk which I highly doubt would happen, but let's say we did, then I agree with you, blow it up and start over with a youth movement.
Don't like the latter option because you're looking at probably st least 3 years before you're competing for a playoff spot.
