Well it is true that many Lombardi have been won without a Brady-esque sacrifice, most have been won with QBs making under 10% of the cap, and only 4 have been won by great QBs making elite money since 2006 and all of those QBs were either Brady or Manning.

I think Kirk should grab all the cash he can. He has earned it and doesn't owe anything to the fans who mostly hate him.

Since being a player fans enjoy watching is a big part of his job, you contradict yourself. He is out there to win football games and entertain fans, he does neither.

It's a big kids world. Time for everybody to suck it up. If you have a better plan at QB, please send it to our new (and improved?) brain trust. I'm sure that will bring home the gold.

Mark does a better job than I could of what we could do if we weren't paying Cousins top 3 money.

Other options at QB:

Carson Wentz had 6 fewer passing TDs on 50 fewer attempts. We can replace Cousins with him and win the 8-10 games Cousins will if he sticks around.

Jimmy G will be available via trade. If he is healthy he is a better QB than Cousins.

Both of those guys save 10+ million in cap and Wentz gives you the option of a cheap bridge QB for the next 3 seasons. Neither are going to get the Vikings a SB ring, but then paying Cousins won't either and at least this way the Vikings can build a superior team with the extra cap they have to spend. It would also be much easier to move on from those two if the next Mahomes fell in the draft to where they could trade up and get him.

I don't blame Kirk for trying to get as much as he can, I blame the front office that was fired for giving him those contracts.

Thanks for the shout out but my plans are the worst. I'm already up to #5. I do not do predictions of what I think the team will do. As a wannabe GM and Holiday Inn Express Rewards Club member, I do plans based on what I would do. :)

I would say this about the Kork situation.

If he is asking for more than 32M per year then faghetaboutit.
If he will not let the team add one void year then a trade has to be pursued.
If they cannot find a trade they can do enough while absorbing that 45M cap hit.
Then, he can go get that 32M+ multi-year deal next year from some other team.

If you got to overthecap and play with the calculator you can see how easy it would be to absorb the 45M.

Maximum restructures of Hunter, Thielen, Smith, Cook, Kendricks, Pierce, & O'Neill would get the Vikings 27.7M in cap space for 2022 without doing anything to Cousins deal.
They would need 4.3M to sign the rookies leaves about 23M to sign some free agents (corners hopefully).
They would still have 60M in cap space in 2023 by doing this because they would no longer have a massive QB cap hit.

Maybe they trade Pierce instead of a restructure?
Maybe they trade Cook because they know they are not going to take on his 2023 cap hit as is?
Lots of ways to skin the cat.

true but Seattle didn't want to keep Hutch and KC didn't want to keep Jared Allen. Buffalo didn't want Fat Pat or Winfield. Putting your head in the sand and being afraid to take chances is the perfect way to stay irrelevant in today's NFL. If that's your goal then sign up Cousins and enjoy 3 more years of 8 win football

To your point, FA hasn't always been a bad deal for us. Wasn't Jared technically a trade?

Now he again has all the leverage. If Cousins wants to remain with the Vikings, he can insist on a lucrative extension with the allure that his presence in 2022 is probably the team’s best chance at a playoff berth, which is the stated goal from an ownership group that doesn’t want to rebuild. If he wants to test free agency for a second time, he can again bet on himself with the hope that a strong 2022 season could land another mega-deal, as the price for quarterbacks continues to climb each year. And if he is against being traded, he can make it clear that he won’t sign an extension with the organization the Vikings want to ship him to, thus damaging his value since any team taking him on would presumably want assurances at the position beyond one season.

How much value does a 35 year old QB with 2 playoff appearances have if he hits free agency? The closest situation I can think of is Phillip Rivers in 2020 and he got a one year deal for 25 million. With cap inflation that is about 29 million in 2023. Unless a team like the Jets is looking for a QB in 2023, if Cousins is looking to go to a contender 29 million is probably all he will get and he will not get the multi year fully guaranteed deals he is used to from us.

Yeah I dont get why ppl think he holds the cards. If Rick was still here sure. Kwesi has no ties to him and its clear the owners dont 100% believe in Kirk as well. Vikings could make it work this year even with his 45 million hit and be in great shape in 2023 or ship him off this year regardless of what they get back. The compensation for Kirk is irrelevant its about getting the money off the Vikings books, if im offered only a 2nd Id take that. Right now I think playing out the 45 million hit, seeing if Kirk will take on void years for us is clearly is an option and I think right now its going to be heading that way. I could be wrong but I see Kwesi as a very smart man whose not going to cater to a wealthy Kirk extension

Ok, so... who were those "conversations" with? Someone with the Vikings organization? Cousins / his agent? Or someone completely irrelevant?

I don't think Cousins will take a hometown discount because, there is no such thing as a home town discount. The only player I can recall taking a hometown discount is Tom Brady. And any argument starts with "But Tom Brady..." ignores the other 999 out of 1000 cases. None of the other Vikings players are playing on a home town discount. None of the other QBs in the trade conversation (Rodgers, Wilson, Carr) are taking a home town discount. Players never give back money unless their option is "give back money or be cut and get none".

The headline for this article should be "I have no information, but my editor says I have to post something so here's something I know you'll click anyways: Kirk Cousins"
