Am I crazy thinking that we have a shot at making a run in the playoffs next year with the current roster by adding on a few players on defense. Am I crazy at thinking if we find a couple cornerbacks to go with Dantzler and a couple of linebackers to go with Kendricks and Hunter the defense should be much better. I say that just because the energy will be so much different in the building, the current coaching staff will bring such a different energy the current roster will benefit from it, play harder, play better. I truly believe we have defensive lineman that are much better than we know because Zimmer would not even look at them because they were too young to be counted on. When listening to the players after the season they seemed to say the culture was not good on the team, Zimmer and the coaching staff ruled by fear instead of motivation and that will change with this coaching staff. This coaching staff sounds so positive and up beat I truly believe we will see a big difference next year. Many of those one score losses will be wins just because of the more positive attitude in the building.
CB - Harrison hand had a 65 PFF grade as a rookie splitting his 163 defensive snaps between slot and out wide as an injury fill in. Nickle CBs are supposed to be inexpensive utility guys, that looks a lot like Hand. And how good was Dantzler? His 72.4 was 18th in the league; not a lockdown superstar, but a mid range CB1. So if we can land even one CB, the secondary can be rebuilt.
LB - Donatel's scheme in Denver didn't rely on premium ILBs. Kendricks is already much better than the options the broncos had in Baron Browning & Kenny Young. We need one "good enough" ILB to play next to a very good one in Kendricks; even if we were forced to use Troy Dye or Chaz Surratt there, the ILBs would be better than the Broncos (who finished 3rd in Points and 8th in yards allowed). The really premium position is the pass rushing OLB - which we have in Hunter. So we need that 2nd OLB - and between that 2nd OLB & 2nd ILB, one of those guys will be the 1st guy off the field in nickel defense. And if we're desperate, Troy Dye actually had a higher PFF grade than the Broncos starter (Malik Reed).
Pass Rush - A better pass rush opposite Hunter is probably needed. Luckily there is flexibility there is adding a big 3-4 DE pass rusher or a more premium OLB. That opens up the "Best Player available"
C/RG - We should get better versions of these. Luckily, these are some of the cheapest positions to add.
WR - Thielen has missed time each of the last 2 years, while Osborn is improving I don't think his skillset would replace Thielen. I would like to see a guy who could play the middle of the field more as a backup.
TE2 - We need something here. If Irv Smith can be a TE1, this guy should be a decent blocker; i.e. not the most expensive thing in the world.
Those look like holes now, but the offseason hasn't even started yet. If it's May and these still look like holes, then I'll worry.
Coaching - Was Zimmer lacking in terms of scheme creativity, development, motivation & game management? Or was he a genius leader who somehow coached 8 wins out of 5 wins worth of talent? If Zimmer really was a drag on the team, we should already have improve with his replacement.
