Kevin O'Connell said there will be an open competition at right guard for the Vikings. New signee Jesse Davis may be the frontrunner but he's not being handed the job.


Feel like we’re back in the Phil loadhout, Alex Boone days again.

Davis graded out at a 69 in PFF the last time he played guard which was for Miami.

Should be an instant upgrade over anyone we've had at RG in years. Now.....what to do about the center position....?

I'm hoping we draft someone in the first 3 rounds.

The Vikings made a misstep moving Oli Udoh to right guard last year. He earned a paltry 54.8 PFF grade for his work across 1,075 snaps at the position, the lowest grade of any Minnesota offensive lineman in 2021.

The front office deserves credit for recognizing the issue and attempting to rectify it, but the manner in which the team is trying to fix this problem is concerning.

Jesse Davis signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Vikings after his release from the Dolphins and is expected to compete for Minnesota's starting RG job this summer.

While Davis has plenty of experience in the league—he's started 72 games over the past five years in Miami, earning snaps at every position but center—he's also coming off an unsightly campaign in which he earned an even lower PFF grade (52.5) than Udoh.

Davis allowed a troubling eight sacks and took four penalties last year while lining up as both a guard and tackle on the right side of Miami's offensive trenches.

Bleacher Report is full of hacks. Davis primarily played RT last year and was awful. Comparing that grade, at a fundamentally different position, to Oli's grade is apples to oranges.

I'm not a fan of this move at all. Unless it's paired with more Draft competition (i.e. a 3rd or 4th Round pick).

But it is emblematic of something Krauser pointed out on Daily Norseman. Kwesi is targeting the bottom third of the Roster for improvement.

Mac Alexander was the worst Nickel CB in the League. Kwesi inked 2 guys that have high floors but low ceilings. Availability is part of having a high floor. So Phillips replaces Pierce and Hicks replaces Barr. Udoh was one of the worst RGs in the League last year. So Davis comes in to compete with Davis and hopefully someone else. The Denver IOL feels more like a camp body.

Seems like Kwesi figured he could take a big money swing at 1 glaring need between IOL, Edge and CB and he chose Edge and decided to focus on lifting the bottom of the Roster up closer to Average.

It's an interesting strategy. I would also invest in Edge over IOL and CB if I could only get one swing of the bat. Every Team that didn't have Rick Spielman as a GM for a decade has filled at least one, and more often two spots on the Interior of their Offensive Line with mid-Round picks, UDFAs or low level signings. Every other freaking Team. If I'm even remotely confident in myself and my Scouting Department I'm confident I can find someone on Day 3 to add to the competition.

CBs don't seem to have as much impact as Edge and all you have to do is look at the 9ers. Bunch of nobodies since Old Man Sherman left and still great, especially in the Playoffs. Largely due to a dominant Front 7.

I'm disappointed Kwesi didn't put IOL to bed once and for all. But I get his decision to prioritize Edge and hope he can get some legit competition for the Davis dudes, neither one of whom I trust.
