Let's get Akiem Hicks and and let this D line unleash havoc.

I wouldn't be opposed to Pat Pete but it would have have to be a BIG discount from last season. 10 million/year should get us a younger CB and hopefully more than 1 year. But if he is all we can afford so be it.

Does anyone know much about Donatell defense and if he plays more press man vs zone or what type of CB's he likes in his system?

Oh I would love to get hicks. He is one of my favorite non Vikings. Can you imagine him with smith and hunter all in the front 7? Oh man it would be pandemonium for the opposing QBs.

Cousins, Kendricks, Smith, Thielan and now Hicks, Smith just added are all over 30.

As someone else noted over the cap has a lot of information available and can at least be used as a rough guide to how much we can save. Cousins is guaranteed and has void years. We just pushed Hunters hit out further and also have to resign him or we take hits. Smith and Thielan save a little cap but their restructures make it so there is a lot of dead cap too still. It has us projected for 36 million next year but that doesn't include Smiths deal being reported or Hunter or Irv Smith Jr (or Bradbury/Mattison/Punter/Kicker etc.).

So we have an older core with a lot of cap pushed back already/not great outlook in space next year. We have a lot of dead cap on guys if they aren't kept around. This is just the reality of the situation and a lot of it is openly known. We can move on much easier come 2024 but we also likely move on from a lot of the veterans too. That's why people are noting sort of a 2 year all in window given all of that, once we extended Kirk it signaled we wanted to keep our "window" open with this core. The moves we have made since only further it.

Not exactly, some teams like to save cap to push to the next season. For reference:

Number of teams that pushed $10M to the next year, then $20M to the next year
2021: 2, 6 (the cap went down)
2020: 11, 6
2019: 9, 4
2018: 6, 4

So yes, there are teams that don't spend all of their cap. It's debatable whether it's a good strategy, but teams still do it.

And as Raptorman shared, viewing future commitments is pretty straight-forward, and the Vikings are in the bottom 6-8 in teams with room to spend in 2023. Sure, there will be cuts and restructures, but every other team in the league will have that option.

It's all a matter of perspective, Saints fans will tell you that they're not in cap hell despite their inability to spend on FAs. Is it the inability to fill out your roster, or is it fine if you can retain your own key FAs? The idea of 'cap hell' is up to your interpretation.

Anyone else notice the Vikings have quietly gained compensatory draft pick capital for 2023. The Vikings have signed 3 FAs in Phillips, Mundt, and Schlottman. Only Horrible Harry will count against the FA tracker. Both Hicks and Z. Smith were cap casualties, so they don't equate in the formula. Granted, they may not be high rounders but it's extra draft capital none the less. The Vikings are at least +2 right now, maybe +3 depending on Vigil's role/status in Arizona.

LOST:

IOL Mason Cole - Pitt 3 years
TE Tyler Conklin - NYJ 3 years
FS Xavier Woods - Car 3 years
LB Nick Vigil - Ariz 1 year (maybe doesn't count)
NT Michael Pierce - CC so he doesn't count

FYI, JC Tretter was also a cap casualty. Or if they sign Buffalo's IOL Bates he doesn't count either since he is a RFA.
