Does it seem like the Vikings are always leading until it matters? Yeah, I was curious too. Xmas shmecksmas, there are questions that need answers. While I had my crayons out, I decided to sketch out a visual aid of how our games have looked as they played out, according to the lead. Isn't it pretty?
Left to right, 1st quarter thru 4th, a second by second snapshot of the lead. The wider the line, the bigger the lead.
*** UPDATED THRU WEEK 18 ***
That's a whole lot of purple isn't it? In fact we haven't trailed since the Lions game. But if you put a number on it, we've had the lead 51.0% of the time, and we've trailed only 26.8%. That doesn't include that last Bears game btw, so it's actually a bit higher now, but my data is only updated through week 14, so we'll just ignore that Bears game for now.
51.0% was 8th highest here in 2021, and it's 158th since 1998 (out of 763 teams). The '98 Broncos led a record 77.8% of the time after 13 games and only trailed 8.7% of the time. I guess that's why they were 13-0 at the time. The '98 Vikings led 69.8% and trailed just 9.6%.
Of the 174 teams who have led by 50.0% or more since 1998, only 9 were below .500 after 13 games, and the 2021 Vikings were 169th ... because ofc they are. The 2020 Falcons were the worst at 4-9, and boy did they do some choking last year.
6-7 teams typically only lead about 38.1% of the time, so are we over achieving or underachieving ? The NFL average for any game is about 40.3%. Could be worse, the 2021 Jets are dead last out of the 763 teams by only leading 8.3% of the time this year. After only leading 17.9% last year.
Vikings year by year thru 13 games:
That 2013 Frazier team was great at scoring points in the 2 minute drill, but not at any other time apparently xD.
