We needed immediate help on the O-Line, DE, LB and TE and the picks either due to injury or performance or talent were not ready to contribute. Longer term there is some potential that this draft could be OK . 2 things to consider at fault in addition to the personnel group choice of picks - can our coaching staff develop talent? and can our training staff prepare our players better to reduce injuries and return from them quicker?
The whole problem is relying on rookies - especially 3rd rounders (who have around a 35-45% chance of panning out, and that's if you have patience) and needing them to step up in a year where the team is 'win now' mode. Rookies usually need time to develop. Mond was a raw prospect and Surratt was even rawer, there should be zero surprise that they aren't ready to play in 2021. Jones and Davis have really disappointed me, though. It's pretty clear that the coaches have zero trust in them, as they must clearly be getting their butts kicked in practice. They were two prospects I really liked and were billed as being less raw than other 3rd rounders, so it's a letdown we haven't seen any shred of hope for them.
One of the biggest issues with Zimmer is that he doesn’t have a good track record of putting together a program that develops players and coaches. This is the true mark of success to me.
Hmmmm, that's something I haven't considered before. We really have not developed a coaching tree here over 8 years - Shurmur was a mercenary and Stefanski was part of Childress' outfit. George Edwards was the longest tenured DC in the league when we let him leave for Dallas... which was not a promotion, as he's a defensive assistant / part DC.
Joe Woods was a DBs coach who has become a DC, but he was actually a Childress guy too. Dang. I thought that was going to be a positive for Zimmer.
Just too soon to evaluate this draft. This time last year I had someone on another board insisting that the 2020 draft produced "5 future Pro Bowl players" (Jefferson, Gladney, Cleveland, Dantzler, Wonnum). This was after Gladney and Wonnum each had their one decent game of the season. Well, that now looks like the number has dropped to 1 star player (acquired by trading an established star player away) and 1 decent starter.
Exactly this. Patience is required... as is a dash of pessimism. Just go back and look at past draft classes and look at all the guys who end up doing nothing... it's not just a Vikings problem.
