Even if the Vikings lose and remain at 5 wins, the most any team in the 7th seed will have is 6 wins (Washington, Philly, Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans), so we would only be 1 game behind that 7th seed...

So although losing to a winless Detroit team is bad on its own, from a playoff perspective, we'd still be "in it"...and I can't see ownership and/or Rick firing Zimmer only being 1 game back of the playoffs...

Zimmer and Rick's tenure post-2021 is a hotly debated topic across many forums, but personally, I think at the very least Zimmer will be gone if we don't go on a run in December and make the playoffs. Rick and the front office is another issue because he seems to have a good relationship with ownership and I don't know if the Wilfs will buy into seeing if they can get more out of Kirk with a different coaching staff, which may allow Rick and the Front Office to stay on.

But the proverbial straw that will break the camel's back in that situation won't just be a loss in Detroit this weekend...it will be this team not making the playoffs come the end of the 2021 season as the Wilfs believe the path to a Super Bowl is by constantly getting to the postseason, so if we aren't in the postseason 2 years in a row under the current regime, changes will likely be made.

I just have to hope the Wilfs see the obvious decline of an already suspect D that is coming in 2022 and realize giving Rick another year is only going to delay our rebuild. We cannot win in 2022. The talent isn't there, especially on defense, and the best draft in the history of the NFL isn't going to change that. The Wilfs have to see that, right?

I'm generally of the opinion that the Vikings play out the season with Zimmer. The sentiment was that things were lined up just the way he wanted in the offseason, so he had the year to prove it. Since the season is still ongoing firing him mid season would be like rolling 1 die at a craps table then walking away because you "know what's going to happen".

The Cowboys - Ravens - Chargers - Packers - 49ers stretch was always circled as a murders row on our schedule, and pre-season going 2-3 in that run wasn't bad. We went 2-3 but it only feels bad because 4-1 was right there for the taking. So in the big picture, the season is still playing out, which make a mid season firing even less likely.

However... I think this Lions game may be the exception. If the Vikings look unprepared this week against a horrible Lions team, it could set up a situation where Zimmer is fired mid season. Even if that decision is made however, I still think it might be 50/50 on if he's fired after the game on a short week before a Thursday game vs Friday after the Steelers.

But the Lions already have their Spielman - Chris - special assistant to the owner and CEO. Rick probably retires before he'd ever be given a chance there as GM. Gotta give the new guy a chance.

Doubtful Zim would get fired even if we lost. Still would be 5-7 and right in the mix of things in the eyes of the Wilfs and Rick. I think they will look at everything at the end of the year and without a Super Bowl win I dont see Zimmer still being here.

and what are you saying? The two no-chancel-at-winning-Superbowl components (Rick winning one as GM, and Lions winning one period) would somehow cancel each other out to form a winning combination?
