Cousins' contract for next year would have been in the 30-35 million range no matter what. The only option is QB of much lesser quality. Which we know goes so well around here. If people weren't b*tching about Cousin's pay they would be b*tching that we need a better QB to win. Pick your poison.
But hey look, Aaron Rodgers is top QB making $46 million next year. He signed a $134 million deal in 2018. And the Packers have what to show for it? Oh yeah, they have been to the playoffs 8 of the last 10 years. Have 4 conference loses in that time period. But it's about getting a good QB to win right? One of these days people will get it. You don't need a Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers to win. The problem is the QB gets way to much credit for the W/L record of any team. Once people understand that simple fact, if they ever do, then QB contracts will come back in line. Which won't happen anytime soon.
Trying to make sure I understand your point. Aaron Rodgers makes a ton of money and wins a ton of games. Sounds like a good allocation of resources to me. The point is to win games and give yourself a chance in the playoffs.
Simple math to me: number of top 10 QBs in the playoffs: 8 by my count. So if you had a top QB you had an 80% chance of making the playoffs.
By the same token if you didn’t have a top 10 QB you would make up the other 6 teams. So 6 out of 22 teams without elite QBs made the playoffs…27%.
Getting a top 10 QB is really difficult admittedly. You can clearly win without one as evidenced by the 27% but you’re making it much harder on yourself.
Back in 2018 I talked myself into Kirk being what the team needed to get over the hump. We proceeded to continue to look to be one or two pieces away for a few years. We’ve gotten to the point where I think objectively we are no longer 1 or 2 pieces away, regardless of who the QB is next year. Imo let Kirk go be the difference for another team that has a roster in need of a QB upgrade.
