I wanted to take a look at the bad run defense against Detroit myself. Specifically I wanted to see if there were any key offenders. Here's what I found so everyone can make their own decisions.
I looked at all plays where the Lions gained 5 or more yards on a run play. There were 7 in total.
- Gain of 12
In the 2nd frame, Kendricks splits the line but doesn’t make it to the back. The RDE is taken out by TE – Fells, with a DE completely neutralized by a TE, Tomlinson is double teamed and the FB is free to block down field.
In the 3rd frame, you can see the DE actually trips on the O Linemen’s leg. I traced the path Kendricks followed chasing the runner, but he never got there.
In the 4th frame, I highlighted Woods, who actually makes the tackle.
Fault: if you have a TE blocking a DE with the run going that way, the DE shouldn’t spend the play on his face, but it was kind of an unlucky trip.
- Gain of 11
In the 2nd frame you can see the offense winning every block. On the top, that is Barr coming off the left end and getting completely stonewalled by the FB.
In the 3rd frame, but you can see Smith hitting the runner, however the red line is where Swift is actually tackled.
Fault: this was just better execution by the offense. Every 1:1 block worked and Swift gained several yards after contact.
- 9 yards
In the 2nd Frame, everything looks shut down and the runner is cutting back left looking for space; this has all the hallmarks of good stop.
However in the 3rd frame, Vigil (circled) overplays the tackle, the blocker pushes Hendricks outside and makes it to the highlighted red line.
Fault: Vigil should probably have made that tackle.
- 5 yards
A single shot here, Williams is hit and tackled for a minimal gain, However he bounces off #63 on the ground and rolls over him for 3 more yards. Meh.
- 13 yards
There are a few things in the 2nd frame: first Sewell is pulling and not blocking Griffen, Hockenson cuts Griffen down and take him completely out. Harrison Smith comes off the right edge, but Griffen hits the ground right in front of him. Smith tries to jump over Griffen.
In frame 3, you can see Griffen out of the play, Hunter vs the RT, leaving basically a 4OL vs 2 DL. From there Sewell (#58, you can see the "5") blasts Barr down the field. Smith (yellow circle), is landing from his jump over Griffen and is in pursuit of Williams. Smith catches Willims at the yellow line and tackles him at the red.
- 9 yards
This is looks like it's mostly a bad decision on Kendricks who over pursues to the right. I circled him in yellow before the play and right after it started. Williams runs straight down the has marks. Maybe he's biting on the motion.
- 7 yard TD
The center runs straight down field to block the LB in the middle of the field. How do you make that work with Tomlinson in the middle of the line? Just hold him. Swift was also really quick through space.
