For Darrisaw to go in, he has to be ready to play. You’ve probably heard questions about whether a rookie is “ready to play” too often to believe in it. After all, look at how bad Hill is. If a tackle is going to struggle, why not pick the rookie tackle with the potential to improve? The reason is that a bad tackle is always going to be worse than a good tackle who doesn’t know the calls. Protection calls are complicated and require flawless execution. But now that we have some tape on Darrisaw, we can see for ourselves if he is ready instead of taking the team’s word for it.

Mike Zimmer confirmed that he was rotating Darrisaw into the game to ease him into NFL speed. Zimmer said he has only had 12 practices up to this point, so a performance behind the curve is understandable.

Darrisaw’s day included four offensive possessions and a total of 28 offensive snaps. He and Hill earned similarly mediocre grades from PFF (a 60.0 and a 54.2, respectively). He has his ups and his downs but mostly looked like the player he was in college. That’s more of a good thing than a bad one since that college resumé earned a first-round selection.

I have often wondered about the validity of PFF grades. After watching the Darrisaw tape and seeing the grades he was given I can only conclude that PFF grades are a bunch of sh!t, at least when referring to OL.

It is clear from the tape that he was way better on rushing downs than passing downs, in fact he was a big reason why the Vikings running game was far better on the left side than the right.

He still has issues to clean up on passing downs, and the next few weeks will test him, but at least he is not getting knocked on his ass like Hill was, and keeping his feet means he can try and get back and save the rep.
The first thing I would like to see fixed is being beaten inside. It happened last week and it was also apparent this week, and it is a big issue for a tackle to get beaten inside. Hopefully the coaches will work with him over the next couple of weeks to correct this. I will be watching the Dallas game closely to see how he does.

I had high hopes when we drafted him (I thought we should have taken him even before trading down) and was worried he wouldn't get past the injury issues.

That's interesting, as today I heard Alex Boone go on about how Darrisaw looked better as a pass blocker than as a run blocker. Ideally it would nice to have a source that isn't PFF to give player ratings as a way to validate opinions such as these. Like how they have Dalvin Cook as one of the worst RBs in football right now... *paranoid*

Watching with my own two eyes and tuning in to guys like Pete Bercich and Greg Cosell gives me a broader sense of what players are actually doing. PFF grades, rankings and such muddle up things especially when discussing the NFL on here.

0 sacks and 571 total offensive yards says a lot about our OL against a decent Carolina defense ON THE ROAD. F the PFF grades!

Darrisaw, who’s been recovering from a core injury since the start of the season, logged 52 pass-blocking snaps without surrendering a single pressure in his first NFL game, per Pro Football Focus, and finished Week 6 with the highest PFF grade among all Vikings offensive linemen. He displayed his trademark power in both the run game and in pass protection and proved that he’s more than athletic enough to deal with twitchy edge rushers like Carolina Panthers star Brian Burns.

Darrisaw finished the 2021 NFL Draft cycle 12th overall on The Draft Network’s player rankings, which is fair for a player who I had ranked as the seventh-best prospect in the class and behind only Penei Sewell at offensive tackle.

Darrisaw received high praise from TDN’s Joe Marino, who said the former Virginia Tech star “has the upside to become a standout, franchise left tackle.” He certainly played at that level against the Panthers despite the difficulties he faced on his road back to good health.

"It definitely was difficult on me mentally, but just having a support system around me ... just communicating my problems and what I’m going through [helped]," Darrisaw said this week. "I had bad days for sure. I didn’t know when I would be able to play again, but I just had to take it a day at a time and not rush things. Because rushing things really won’t equal up to good results. So I just took it a day at a time, and I knew my time was coming, and when it came I was ready."

"I don’t feel anything at all from the injury," Darrisaw said. "It’s 100% healed. The worst days are behind me and I feel great."

This is great news for a Vikings team that before Week 6 featured 11 drafted rookies who barely took any meaningful reps on offense or defense. Darrisaw can change that narrative by himself. A first-round success at left tackle is arguably the second-most impactful draft-day score aside from quarterback. So even if the rest of Minnesota’s 2021 class fails to deliver, hitting on Darrisaw is a massive victory.

There’s a long way to go before the story of Darrisaw’s rookie season is complete, but it’s off to a great start after his dominant showing against the Panthers.

Jeremiah Sirles was singing Darrisaw's praises on Mathew Coller's podcast. He does a deep dive on what he did right as well as what future DE's will be looking to exploit now that there's game film on him.

It's definitely worth a listen, Sirles is a very knowledgeable guy and great at assessing lineman.
